Play it Again, Sam #30a - "Diamonds and Rust"

I am not even motivated enough to explain my lack of motivation over the last three days, but three days away from Play it Again, Sam, is enough, motivation be damned. As always, Play it Again, Sam, is a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. We are at #30a, the "original:" "Diamonds and Rust" by Joan Baez. As you already know, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Joan Baez is one of America's all-time great folk/protest singer/songwriters, although she has often used material written by others over the course of her six decade career, during which she has released over 30 albums. She also performed at Woodstock, a badge of honor for artists and bands from that era. Her classic hit, "Diamonds and Rust," is the title track to her 1975 album. The song recounts her relationship with Bob Dylan, which had taken place a decade earlier, although Baez had told Dylan that the tune was about her ex-husband, David Harris, claiming that she wrote it while Harris was in prison. (Somehow, this beautiful song sounds even more so knowing that it's about Bob Dylan, but maybe that's just me.) "Diamonds and Rust" was a North American hit, reaching #35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and #61 in Canada (and #'s 5 and 14 on the Adult Contemporary charts of those countries , respectively.) And you know what's coming, but stay tuned for the cover anyway! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

Now you're telling me you're not nostalgic Then give me another word for it You were so good with words, and at keeping things vague. Yeah, it's about her ex-husband. I love this song.

I do too. She has done so many great songs. But of course, you already know that I love protest singers, even when they aren't singing protest songs. That being said, one of my all-time favorite lyrics is by Edwyn Collins, from "A Girl Like You:" "Too many protest singers, not enough protest songs."

@teamfreak16 I was at again, could not help it and maybe more in my own head. I would start a fan page but they already have one all though the bad religion one posts a lot more with song quotes and stuff. When the Rancid person posts, it is usually just pictures. The Bad Religion one is said to be looking for new ownership and was fairly interesting how many people wanted to take it over, but think many shied away when they learned how time consuming it is.

@crossbones27 - I would bet that it takes up quite a bit of time. That's probably why I have never done one. Plus, like you said, everybody pretty much has one anyway.

I just don't understand the hate for Rancid. A great band with something to say.

What a beautiful song and what a voice Joan had. She still sounds pretty good on her new release this year still. I got to see her at Big Sur Hot Springs in 1964.

I've heard some of that new album. I liked what I heard. That must have been something to see her, especially back then!

Yes, I think this song is about the affair with Dylan and her looking back on it. I really do not like any of her songs except, "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Nice write up BTW.
