A crazy start to my day but we have a baby bird yay

I can’t even describe how excited I am about this! I went out this morning as usual and checked the birds nest. We now have one egg that has hatched as you can see in the photo I feel like squealing like a little piggy! Before my daughter went to school I took her out to show her. The mama and papa bird sat nearby in a tree yelling at us. Mama bird is used to me walking past with the puppy but she isn’t used to my daughter. I took the puppy for a walk at 10am while my son was on a short break between classes. I put up two private property signs then started cleaning up garbage that’s been thrown from cars driving by. I emptied a bottle out and my puppy decided to roll in it. She smelled so bad. She also had three ticks crawling on her I flicked off. I brought her in and gave her a bath and she still stinks. It took me a half hour to screw a tie out post into the ground as there are so many rocks under the ground I kept hitting. Once I found a spot I could fully screw the tether down into I put her collar on took her out and hooked her up. She ran and the plastic part on the collar snapped and she ran off lol. It’s noon now and I have a lot more to do so I will be back later.

@Courtlynn I think I am going to start doing that with the natural spray I have. I don't feel it really works but better then going out with nothing on. I don't want to spray the one with deet in it on us everyday though.

@Courtlynn thankfully the smell has dissipated as her fur dried. Every day we go outside I am flicking ticks off us. Luckily with their red hind ends it's fairly easy to spot them on us.

@Juliaacv that is what my boyfriend said but I forgot the worms he had in his fridge when I was at his house this past weekend. If the worms stopped escaping my worm farm I would have had lots for her to eat.

@shaggin What a wonderful learning experience to be a part of for your daughter, and you're right, it has to be so exciting to go out every day and check on them. You'll have to get some worms and leave them somewhere close for Mama to feed on.

Yikes! What a day you had! I'm overjoyed at seeing that baby robin and hope they all hatch. The birds scream at me and Doodles when we go for our walks in the yard.

@DianneN It was a wild start to the day but it ended with me getting that gorgeous wooden nook so it was wonderful. Only one egg has hatched and the bird is taking up most the nest. One egg is gone though and I don't know what happened nor why the other two eggs haven't hatched.

@DianneN We have tons of squirrels and chipmunks here I had no idea they will steal the eggs. Do they eat them?

@shaggin I'm so happy you had such a wonderful day. You certainly deserve it. I was walking Doodles earlier and found a broken robin's egg shell. I know it was a squirrel. I'm so upset.

What a cute little bird, that nest must be pretty low for you to get such a good pic huh.

@cintol I don't understand why but these Robins don't seem to ever make their nests up high. This nest is about 4 1/2 feet off the ground. This time she built it on top of an old ladder along a window on our she'd. Usually they build them in the lilac bushes and animals always knock them down. When the wind blows hard though the lilac branches sway a lot so it's just such a bad spot they usually build them. There is another nest right along the road in a lilac bush. It's to bad a spot for me to go out in the road to see if there are any eggs. It's a blind curve and although people are supposed to go 25 up the hill they go much much faster.

@cintol bad for them building them low but so exciting for me. Some birds here lay their eggs on gravel its so easy to not see the eggs and run over them or step on them.

@shaggin Wow, I am surprised they build them in bushes like that and not up in the trees where they are safer. They must feel pretty safe putting one on your shed, its cool though that you are able to watch them and see the babies hatch.

@shaggin What a good and loyal puppy. I wanted to trust my dog once so we were inside the building going to our apartment and took off her leash. Instead of following me up the stairs she took off down the stairs and out the door. She was gone 2 hours. Accidentally followed someone with a dog visiting my upstairs neighbor. The upstairs neighbor knew she was my dog and brought her back to me. She has quite an adventure.

@thislittlepennyearns I sure hope it stays that way for you. Ticks are awful and it's scary when our pets or kids get bitten wondering if they will get Lyme disease. Here there are so many cases of it it's becoming an epidemic

@GardenGerty today she was naughty but this is common for dogs to roll in stinky stuff for some reason. Hopefully she learned her lesson by having to get a bath which she hates and then having to stay on the leash for her walks the rest of the day.

Oh how beautiful is that? The eggs are a gorgeous color. I'm trying not to let my cats see the computer screen so that they don't get any silly ideas. LOL Just kidding. The kitties are totally cool with it all and have no interest in anything right now except food and sleep.

@shaggin We actually have several cats - over 5. They range in age from about 5 to about 12 or 13. For the most part they are quite active and playful. Typically they do not show aggression toward birds. They look with an inquisitive stare but that's all it amounts to.

@betlynfrnds the eggs really are such a pretty color! How old are your cats? My cat is 15 and all she does is eat and sleep too. We have two birds as pets and she does not care about them at all which is lucky for us!

The little birdie looks so cute. I remember few years back two eggs hatches in a nest next to the window of my classroom. The children in my class were too excited and they worked so quietly for two weeks so that they do not disturb the new borne. All the best with ticks and stinkiness

@Fourwalls aww that is sad I have seen so many ruined eggs and nests smashed over the years. For some reason these robins rent to build their nests on the lilacs bushes. This mama build hers on the side of a shed window so it is in a little safer spot. This was the first time I have ever gotten to see an egg hatch.

@JudyEv this tether and rope are designed to hold a dog weighing up to 60 pounds. She's maybe 10 so it won't break. It was the plastic part on her collar that snapped. I will look for a more sturdy collar for her this weekend. This photo was taken with my iPhone. It takes pretty nice photos when ai don't feel like getting out my bigger camera.
