An Olive Is A Fruit, Not A Vegetable

that you're going to be dissatisfied with some of the canned foods. Even if it saying “low sodium” you have to read the serving size and compare it to fresh or frozen versions. Obviously picking olives fresh wouldn't be an option unless you live in an area where that's possible – even then – most aren't ready to eat when harvested. Having an obsession with black olives but hating the amount of sodium a serving contains, I started looking for low sodium versions. The Mario Low Sodium Pitted Black Olives are a nice alternative but you know almost instantly that they are lacking salt. They are pitted but you do need to be careful when snacking on them as there may be part of a pit inside the olive. You are only getting six ounces of product in the can, the rest of it is water (but no salt). A serving is five olives and that nets you 3 mg of fat, no protein, 40 mg of sodium (a fourth of a serving of regular black olives) and no carbohydrates. The can is heavy so if you want to recycle it for bacon fat or cooking oil, this will definitely do the trick. I got this at Wal-Mart for a little over two dollars. While that is more than I would spend on canned olives I overlook it because I have a lot less guilt eating a couple servings of these when I have a craving for them. Sure, there is a taste trade off but if you are adding them to a salad with dressing they'll pick up some of it and give them a little kick.

They are just fat? No carbs or protein at all? Or are the carbs fiber so they aren’t counting them? I hate olives. Oddly, I adore olive oil.

They are fruits, just as apricots, peaches or, for that matter, tomatoes.

If I buy canned foods, I'm not looking for the content or the serving. I just grabbed them, and now I'm thinking it is better to check the content and the serving too.
