'Tis the season...

Wildfire season, that is. We had a bit of excitement here in my town yesterday as a wildfire broke out along the stretch of highway north of town. The conditions weren't very favorable and within a couple of hours it had grown to about 2,100 acres and forced the evacuation of a few communities. We could see the plume of smoke from our house, and got to see several engine crews from other cities arrive at the fire station next to the park. The helicopter shown in the linked news article flew directly over us on the way to either the airport or to fill up at one of the local lakes. By the time we left to run some errands in the afternoon, they seemed to have it pretty well under control. The section of highway that had been closed was reopened, and it seemed like the crews working the south edge of the fire were just mopping up hot spots. Several buildings burned, including at least two homes, but they were able to limit this one to about 5,100 acres in the end. The last major one in the area was the Goodwin Fire that burned about 25,000 acres in 2017. The big difference between the two is the type of fuels available; the Goodwin Fire burned through mountainous areas heavy in Ponderosa pine and chaparral, while yesterday's Viewpoint Fire was limited to the grasslands north of town.

I called my parents right after you posted about that the other night just to check up on them. Apparently there was a fire before that one out by one of the lakes caused by someone's chains sparking along the road. It started fires in 11 spots or something. Sounds like you guys are in for a really dangerous fire season this year. Its still a while before monsoon season starts. Be safe!

Yeah, that was out by Drake from what I heard. They had another one a bit closer to us yesterday that was started along Fain Road in possibly the same manner, and when the kid and I were heading back to the college from Safeway it looked like the brush along Granite Creek under the bridge had just caught. Reminds me of that damn Smash Mouth song. My world's on fire, how 'bout yours?

They can be pretty scary. It's good that you're getting a lot of rain this spring, at least for the effect it has on the fuel for wildfires. This season is looking like it's going to be pretty rough if the start is any indication. The state sees more than 1,500 wildfires every year, but most of them don't get the type of coverage this one did. There are five reported through the Inciweb site right now, with a couple that started back in April on the list. The really sad thing is that the majority of the fires in the state are human-caused.

@yukimori We had landslides in some area due to the heavy rains. Too much rain is also not good.

Wildfires are just a freak of nature. Climate change is upon us and to think otherwise would be foolish.

@yukimori there are forest fires here in the Philippines but these forest fires are on purpose and a way to clear trees to make agricultural land.

I hate fire season, with the winds out this way it's easy for any fire that starts to be blown in all kinds of directions.

The weather station issued a fire watch for us a couple days ago but lucky for us there was no fire. The good thing is there is limited vegetation for a fire to feed on but fire can spread really quick even with that little bit.

It's amazing how far a little fuel can go in a situation like that, isn't it?

No, everyone was able to evacuate in time. The final tally seems to be two burned houses, 12 burned outbuildings, and 10 RVs and passenger vehicles.
