Another possible scam?

United States

I don't know for sure, but a few nights ago about 9:30 p.m, there was a knock on my door. I asked who it was, no one said anything, asked again the person said Lyft. For those that don't know Lyft is like a taxi , will pick up and give you a ride for a fee. No one here called for Lyft, so I waited for the person to walk down the stairs. A man was at the back passenger door and a lady inside, they told me they were trying to return a cell phone a customer forgot. I told them no one called for Lyft here, wrong house. They were at the car playing with a cell phone, I just closed the door they were parked for a bit. I really started thinking about this, Lyft does not come to a door, and if a passenger for the phone, they would know who they picked up and where. So I am not sure what was really going on and who was really here, but just figuring, again, because we are a corner house, weird things like this keep happening here.

@CookieMonster46 - Agree with the other comments. Call the cops and the company. You might have been their first "test". Based on your reactions, they might decide to refine their tricky gameplan and try a different approach on "the next victim", "the next time". You never know. But when something seems suspicious, odd, or out of place, that's usually because it is.

That does sound suspicious. If I were a lyft driver and found a phone someone forgot, I would take it to the company's lost and found. Whoever lost it could call and claim it.

I just didn't think fast enough, I hate when I do that, I should have called them, but again, the time they get here and then ask what kind of car, and what they look like, my memory of the faces will get foggy.

I get scared with that kind of things. Sometimes strangers call me, using my name and last name. I have learned to tell them it is a wrong number. Bad people are everywhere.

I do not like this, I would investigate. Do not open your door if you hear knocking in the evening.

It sounds suspicious...it could be thieves checking to see if there's someone home, or some other scam.

It sounds as if they were casing the joint. A corner house would make for a quick getaway. I would continue to be watchful, but you may have already shown them you were alert to any trickery. The rules for Lyft, if I am not mistaken would not allow them to have extra people riding along with the driver.

You did the right thing by not answering by not answering the door. I would not answer it either.

If you had left your phone, (was it missing?) they would have called one of your contacts to reach you. Sounds like a scam or worse.

I think they would have called you first and asked you if you wanted them to return the phone in the mail or if you wanted to pick it up or have them deliver it. One way or the other, just coming by and knocking at your door was the wrong thing for them to do. Best not to answer the door no matter who it might be. We had a scare 3 nights ago. At half past midnight, we woke up to a loud knocking at our back bedroom window.

Sounds like an attempt to break in. I would have taken the plate number of the ca, if possible, or remembered details about the people. Also, I would have called Lyft and the police as well to report the matter.

I couldn't see the plate or the type of car just the color. Without going outside I couldn't get that info. If they had nothing to do with Lyft, which I doubt now, Lyft couldn't be of help. I should have called the police, but didn't think of it fast enough.

I would have called the police right away. They probably did the same thing to others. A lyft is Not Free. It is a few pennies less than a normal Uber ride.
