Morning Owl Moment

Had a pair of owls being fairly loud in a tree right outside the window where the computer is about an hour or so ago. Heard them out front a half-block or so away a few mornings ago, but didn't try to get any audio then because I wasn't sure if the camera would get it. This time, I was sure the camera would 'hear' it.

We don't get many owls around where I live although the dawn chorus starts around 4 am in the lighter mornings which makes my dog think it's time to get up! They are beautiful birds and can do that swivelly thing with their heads like Beatlejuice

I don't get to see them often because they aren't active when it is light, but I hear them quite a bit. I did manage to get one shot at the end of February this year just as it was getting light of one across the street in a tree.

@JolietJake We have some in captivity which are displayed to schools in the area. I don't know if it's cruel or not. They are well cared for.

@sprite1950 Raptor centres these days have to abide by strict rules and the birds they keep are always ones which have either been injured and can't, for various reasons, be released back into the wild or they are born and raised in captivity and so are to some extent 'tame' and wouldn't be able to fend for themselves. It is an awesome experience to have a large (but surprisingly light) bird fly straight at you and land on your outstretched (and well gloved) hand. We have two or three centres near where I am and I've been fortunate enough to have experienced this a couple of times.

They are pretty loud, I never heard owls nearby. What I hear most during the night are the hedgehogs, they are noisy.

I wouldn't have known that was owls if you hadn't said. I thought owls were supposed to hoot?

I've only 'seen' a few in my life in the wild, but I've heard a lot of them

That's so neat. My son had owls visiting in his yard and now he has ravens.

This did not sound at all like what I was expecting. Good capture.

Owls actually creep me out. If I’m outside and hear them I always get worried I am going to get dive bombed.

At first, it sounded like a little baby waking up! LOL We have morning doves, it sounds like they're two blocks away. Instead, they are right overhead!

Put a little bass to that and you've got a #1 song. I went to the sport/vacation show last year, and they had a screech owl on display. The handler said they don't screech, despite their name.

@JolietJake -- I think they said it was the barn owl that does the screeching. Maybe the screech owl lives in a barn.
