Life, and the Cycle of Things

One of my friends was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease a couple years ago, which has a high mortality rate. Part of his treatment to beat it into submission was chemo and steroids, which left him with another rare health issue -- the bones in his upper legs died, which means his mobility is becoming more and more limited. He got put on a list for a femoral head transplant a week ago. Today he got matched with a donor. He will be having surgery soon and if all goes well, he will eventually be able to walk and run again. This wouldn't have been possible if somebody else hadn't died. As I wrote about last night, one of my best friend's sons died of an overdose yesterday. I didn't know him but my heart is broken for her. He was only 26. As far as I know, he was not the donor for my friend's surgery, but it helps put life and death into perspective knowing that my friend wouldn't be able to have the surgery he needs if someone else hadn't passed on and donated their body parts to those who need them. I am still very sad for my friend who lost her son. But I am also thankful that my other friend found a donor for his surgery. He is only 32 years old and hopefully still has many years ahead of him. May he spend them running.

I'm glad he found a match! Though I myself wont be a donor, as of now.

Me too! I used to be registered as a donor, but I'm not currently. I'm considering registering as one again, but the thought of having my body all butchered up after I die freaks me out.

@Courtlynn Yeah, and even though logically I know I won't be conscious and won't feel a thing, the idea of it still bothers me.

@Srbageldog same. you are not alone in that. I actually don't think a single person in my family, (aunts, uncles, cousins. grandmother and her siblings and their kids and grandkids) are donors.

So glad they found a donor. I'm a donor so that if anything happens to me I can still help others or at least I hope I can!

@Ithink I guess it's natural to have those thoughts...if only I can push them out of my head!

I used to be registered as a donor, but I removed myself from the list last time I renewed my license because I was having bad anxiety over the thought of my body parts being distributed (which is illogical, I know.) I am re-thinking that decision, though. It really was a selfish one, and I would rather help others who need it if I can.

I hope so. There's a lot of wisdom in Lion King. We're all a part of the Circle of Life.

@TheHorse I would love to be buried in one of these:

@Srbageldog Heh. I'm starting to think about where I want to be buried, and what kinds of plants I want to become a part of.
