It's a very late start for Play it Again, Sam today, because frankly, I've been really, really busy sitting around doing a whole lot of nothing. For the uninitiated, Play it Again, Sam is a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. We are at #26a: "Ziggy Stardust" by the legendary, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, David Bowie. In 1972, David Bowie was well into his glam rock phase, personified by his classic concept album from that same year, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars, a story about an alien rock star that acts as a messenger for other extraterrestrials. Bowie reportedly based the character on Playboys frontman Vince Taylor, psychobilly performer the Legendary Stardust Cowboy, and his own costume designer, Kansai Yamamoto. He used the name "Ziggy" because "It was one of the few Christian names I could find beginning with the letter 'Z.'" "Ziggy Stardust" was not released as a single, and, as such, is merely Track Seven on the album. Except that it's Classic Bowie. And a classic piece of rock and roll, as well, ranked at #282 in Rolling Stone Magazine's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, and is part of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll exhibit. And it was covered by one of my all-time favorite bands. Stay tuned! (Info verified by Wikipedia)

I am most curious as I am not aware of a cover of Ziggy that I can recall.

I remember seeing concert footage of Bowie on tour during those Ziggy Stardust days. Man was he ahead of his time when it came to glam rock. An androgynous bisexual rock star, wow

Did you ever see the Ziggy Stardust concert film that D.A. Pennebaker made? It's really good.

@dgobucks226 - 1973. It was the final concert as Ziggy and the Spiders. I used to have it on VHS.
Directed by D.A. Pennebaker. With David Bowie, Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, Mick Woodmansey. The July 3rd, 1973 historic concert of the 'leper Messiah'. This was to be David Bowie's last concert with the Ziggy persona and the Spiders from Mars. A great medl

@teamfreak16 Probably not. I did see a documentary on Bowie recently which focused on his career which was excellent. When was the film made? I am watching a clip on U Tube now of Ziggy Stardust. Bringing back those early 70's memories, definitely a must watch back in those days, lol.

"Making love with his ego." How many rockers does that describe? I'd call this one of Bowie's signature songs, even if it wasn't released as a single.

All of them? It's one of Bowie's best songs, which is saying something considering how many great songs he made.
