The Hummingbird Chicks have Hatched

My husband took the photo above of the two baby hummingbirds in the nest by our front door. The mother hummingbird can no longer sit on the nest. She sits on the edge and flies back and forth, feeding her babies. We are still avoiding using our front door as much as possible, so we do not disturb her when she is feeding them. It may be hard to tell, but there are two chicks in the nest, and they fill up the entire nest. We can't wait until they are ready to fly. It shouldn't be long now!

@JohnRoberts - I'm sure there are nests around your house, just not so visible. This one is just outside our front door, under the overhang. That has kept the nest nice and dry, as well as safe from predators. A crow tried to get to it one day, but there wasn't enough clearance between the roof edge and the top of the nest. This was one smart hummingbird mother!

@rebelann - The eggs were the size of little blue marbles. Now, the baby birds are several times the size of the eggs, but they are still very small. We keep wondering when they will try to fly!

@DeborahDiane What happens to the nest when they fly away?

@Hannihar - It was interesting. The nest was almost completely filled up from the "poop" from the chicks, so we took it down. It didn't look like another mother bird could use it in the future. It will be interesting to see if another bird builds one in the same place someday.

@Hannihar - We have a lot of hummingbirds where we live, so I imagine they joined the crowd of them which enjoy the California lifestyle ... humming around from flower to flower! We try to guess which ones might have grown up by our front door, but it is impossible to tell! LOL

@DeborahDiane That was a good idea to take it down. So, where are the chicks and Mom now?

@allen0187 - We read that it will take a few weeks after they hatched before they fly. We aren't sure exactly when they hatched, but it was at least a week ago. We keep watching!

@JamesHxstatic - My husband held his phone up above the nest and took the picture. I was thrilled to see what they looked like, since I had not seen them before. We look at the nest from a distance every time we go out the side door. Usually, all we see are their two little beaks peaking over the top of the nest. They look like two needles!

@JudyEv - Yes, their heads are now above the edge of the nest. There is no room for their mommy at all. I wonder when they will learn to fly!

Those are so cute. Amazing little creatures. When I see hummingbirds, I always think that they were the inspiration for the helicopters we have now. I know that they are the only species of birds that can do that kind of unique maneuvering, flying backward then going forward at a fly-like speed.

Nature is amazing. I have a robin's nest in the bush by my front door and the 4 eggs just hatched. Momma is a busy bird keeping her babies fed

@Marilynda1225 - That would be cool to have a robin's nest nearby. Were the eggs blue? We always hear about the color "Robin's egg blue." Let me know how the babies do!
