The bold, the brave - or the foolish?

What would be your reaction if you find yourself face to face with a gunman who is bent on doing harm to yourself and family?. A woman - resident of a Caribbean island, made a quick decision - one which may be considered brave or foolish. She was relaxing at home with her husband one evening when a masked gunman burst into the home and shot her husband several times. According to the news reports , the woman instead of cowering in a corner - "sprang into action and floored the intruder with several punches" . She then picked up his gun which had fallen from his hands and held it on him until the police arrived. Her husband is in serious but stable condition - and the gunman when unmasked turned out to be someone the couple knew. What would you do in a similar situation ? Do you have any means of protecting yourself and family in the event of a home invasion?

I would do the same thing. I will not go down without a fight. Yes I do have protection.

Of course he might not have shot her seeing he was wearing a mask - but she decided not to wait to find out. One can never be sure what is in the mind of a gunman - so she thought it best to fight.

I do have the skill to disarm someone - From training I received for a job as a correction officer - but I hope I never have to use it,

I never learned any form of self defense. I have watched a lot of kung fu movies though.

I am happy the woman reacted like that. I would be happier if she had shot a leg or two. Last year Dec my family was held up for 4 hours by 4 masked men. We did not respond in anyway except to do as they asked. We used no violence. We came out out it unhurt.

When I lived in a small apartment complex - about 7 apartments - robbers posing as Water Commission employees surprised an elderly couple and their daughter . They ransacked the apartment, and took their time selecting what they wanted. No one was hurt - but another couple in a house down the road didn't get off lightly - the husband was pistol whipped.

@Kandae11 Yup, dangerous times. That's why I am disappointed that she didn't shoot at his two feet and crippled him.

my initial reaction, aside from the surprised look in my face, would also be putting all my strength together to protect myself by attacking the intruder. presence of mind and the will power to save myself should be my first instinct.

If that happened to me I don't know if I could keep my wits about me but if I could I would kick him in the shins then go for his eyes. If you can take him by surprise yo might get out alive just as this lady did.

The woman hero did the bravest, right thing. I hope that gunman with murderous intentions gets locked up for a very long time.

This falls under, "You have to be there." I certainly have ideas about how I think I may react. But until I am confronted with a real situation, I am really not sure what my reaction would be. I tend to think I would do whatever I could to protect my wife though.

That is really risky for her to do. I am sure I wont be able to think clearly when that happens to me. But I admire that woman’s courage. I just hope there is no foul play here.

Like you, I would be confused- any decision I made might come too late. He knew them, so I am wondering about his reason for shooting the husband.

@Kandae11 That is worst too. The person who wants to kill the husband is someone they know. That is even more painful.

She probably didn't even think about what she did, it was a reflex. When roomie isn't here, I have taken to sleeping with a heavy walking stick next to my bed. This is a safe area and I have no real concerns for my safety, but then again..you never really know!

I can hardly tell what I would do in a situation like this. Very often when adrenaline kicks in people react in strange ways. In this case, after witnessing the gunman shoot her husband, I guess the woman felt she had very little to lose. On which Caribbean island did this happen exactly?
