Closets and seasonal clothes and taking out the mental trash

Having just worked on my closests made me wonder - how many people switch out clothes seasonally? I have to. Apparently I hoard clothes. And this after I paired down. Some number of months ago this apartment building discontinued tenant use of the properties' storage room. And that is where I had been storing my seasonal clothing. In addition to 2 chests of drawers and 3 closets - I still managed to have 10 large trash bags of clothes. These were to be switched out seasonally. That's an insane amount of clothing for anyone to have. So knowing that the bags had nowhere to go and must either be stored in the middle of my living room - or gotten rid of - I went through clothes and got rid of a lot of things. I can't begin to say how helpful it's been. 1) - I don't miss anything. Not a piece of the 7 large bags I got rid of 2) - Now I can see what I own 3) - No more trying on things that don't fit or look good and then feeling sad because they don't fit. It's been a huge self esteem boost. 4) - Getting dressed is fun now 5)- I have more room It's been fantastic. As for the clothes? I donated them so they will get new use at another place. I encourage anyone else to do so too. Photo: Pixabay

The only thing I don't wear year round is the warm fluffy pajama pants / my recently bought onesies. Everything else (leggings, sweaters, tanks, shorts, tees) I wear any time of the year. Most of what I wear though is in my two laundry baskets. As I tend to wear the same thing over and over lol. Plus it doesn't all fit in my dresser and closet. with the winter pjs, and not so big drawers.

Oh wow, that's cool way to do it. I know I struggle with t-shirts in winter. You can always wear a sweater over them. But on the other hand I mostly don't layer - I just wear warmer....

I do not have seasonal clothes because of the climate where I live, but I do tend to wear sleeves in the December to February months.

I switch out, not because I have to many but because if you leave them hanging year round they will get dusty. I did what you just did back in 2009, that was the year of forever change for me. A few weeks ago I did the switch out and got rid of more clothes, winter and summer. I do not miss them either.

Ah, I didn't notice dusty, but I bet you're right. It's amazing how you don't miss it, isn't it? Other than a few pieces I don't even remember what all I had in those 7 bags

I wish, I wish, I wish some of that could rub off on me! I have hundred of outfits but can't get down to sorting them out. Here we don't have seasonal clothes. We have home clothes, working clothes, going-out clothes, prayer clothes, and wedding clothes...and others. By the way I love your bedroom. On what day can my room look like that?

I wish I could give you some of that inspiration. :-) I also wish that was my room, instead that was just a graphic I found on Pixabay :-)

@FayeHazel Oh, I though that was your room after you sorted things out. My new apartment still need to be carpeted so all my things are still in bags yet. Having a tough time sorting things through.

Hello Faye. That is what I do too. Donating my clothes since I know that someone else will be able to use it and at least put a smile on their faces. Plus, I like mixing and matching clothes. That way you can still feel that your clothes are new.

Oh that is such a great thing to do. You're right, sometimes just what you wear an item with gives it a whole different look or feeling and it's "new" again :-)

@FayeHazel Indeed. People wont even notice if the clothes are old. They would always see something that is "new" on you like your new style or new way of dressing up.

Going through my clothes as well as I'm trying to switch to a minimalist lifestyle so I'm looking to either sell the clothes or donate these.

Oh but I love all the clothes that I have hoarded . If only I could hoard more closets . I don't doubt that letting things go just made for easier living . . . I know I should do that . . . I am just slow to let go .

I have clothes in all the bedrooms of our house .. I must get rid of half of them as I no longer feel the need to have as many clothes as I used to ..

@FayeHazel most of my formal clothes I only wore once ... I kept them in the hope that I would fit into them again . .but it will never happen .. so I am letting them go ..

I bought some storage solution bags from QVC 2 weeks ago. I took my winter clothes and put them in the large bag and now I need to vacuum it down to size and then it will go into a pretty zipper storage unit that will fit on a shelf in my closet. I plan to organize my linen closet with some of the other bags. I will be giving away some things as well.

I think it's wonderful to purge your closets and donate clothes. Now that we live our winters in Florida, getting rid of most of my winter clothes has left more room for spring to early fall clothes.

@FayeHazel When I started decluttering I got rid of things and occasionally go through my closet and get rid of things. When it is our holiday of Passover we clean things and I have gotten rid of things then too.

I clean out my closets when I am changing my clothes for the season. I give away a lot of clothes but it feels good to know that somebody is going to get good use out of them.

That's awesome! I need to do something similar for my girls! Currently my two oldest share a room. My youngest has a dresser in my room. I've been steadily donating stuff they have out grown but kept a few pieces since baby girl is steadily catching up! Me? I don't have a huge winter clothes wardrobe. Mostly a coat and sweaters that can be worn over summer tanks!

@FayeHazel it helps a ton! Plus majority of their clothes are bought gently used or traded between moms to moms! Kids grow to fast to just constantly be buying new!

@Daelii I think that's a great idea for moms with little ones. It seems that way - kids grow really fast and the clothes won't wear out with just 1 kid using them before they're grown out of

Nice! I think this exercise is great for you mentally and a good social contribution to the less fortunate. I go through my closets at least once every year too for the same reason. Sometimes I just buy a couple new items to add to the clothes that I donate.

Good point, it is good on so many levels. :-) It's a good habit to be in. Ah yes, I find I have been accumulating some more clothes in place of the old ones myself.
