well, this is nice

Further to my post about parental units often using mobile phones as an easy bribe for screamingly bored toddlers, I was yesterday treated to the other end of the spectrum. The Talk Too Much Mum. Yesterday morning I was quite exhausted by one such mum, here on the bus. A whole hour of her asking Henry where he was was a tad frustrating. Where are you Henry? Henry, where are you? she screeched continuously. Occasionally she interrupted this delightful game of peek-a-boo with something like, No Henry, leave your socks on! I truly don't know how Henry's cherubic cheeks could cope with his giggles. At one point she said to him, I thought you'd be asleep by now, Henry. Yes, and he might well have been if you hadn't spent so much time yapping the same thing at him over and over and over and over again. My direct Line Manager isn't at work this week. She's supping Prosecco and munching on spaghetti in Italy, whilst her minions get observed by even higher management. It's almost as if she deliberately chose to go on a jolly at a time when her team need her most. And, to add insult to injury, she only told a trusted two or three people. There wasn't even a courtesy email awaiting us all on Monday morning. She is not a good manager. She has favourites, she fosters an atmosphere of tittle-tattling, she lies, and she's a bit of a bully. But the point is, she isn't at work this week and the atmosphere - despite observation worries - is relaxed and jovial. I wish she was off more often, although i suppose that the old adage is correct, eh? ... Better the devil you know.

managers should at least let staff know when they are likely to be away or indisposed - half the time their substitutes can't do anything because they don't know where the manger who is absent left the information needed for dealing with staff and client situations

Thankfully when my line manager is off, my old line manager pops in to check on the team, and I like her very much!

@arthurchappell I think she'd rather not have to do it. It is a long walk from her office to our staffroom!

I like both Prosecco and spaghetti but never together . For what I know the weather is horrible in all north Italy today, it's horrible here too. Moms who talk too much are a pain, I pity their poor kids.

@Poppylicious It is finally sunny today and it should be sunny also tomorrow. Well, I am glad for those two days of sun, the next week we are back to rain every day. Nice Spring!

Oooh, maybe she's having a horrid time! I love spaghetti, not keen on Prosecco.

@poppylicious Ah the tiresome chatter of over-involved parental units. Just let Henry get some sleep dear! Even babies need some alone time to relax and turn introspective and the more often the better.

Yes, introspection is good. And people-watching. Babies and toddlers should learn the art of that.

The poor child is probably already irreparably damaged due to being named after a household appliance!! As for your manager, Mrs WorDazza has a theory about female managers. They're useless!! Her words, not mine! She reckons that most female managers fall into one of two categories: 1. The type such as yours who has favourites and basically just can't leave idle gossip alone and ends up alienating everyone but her favourites. 2. The type who try to out-men men and behave like they think men behave in their role but end up portraying some sort of caricature of a male manager that just doesn't actually exist and ends up alienating everyone!!

@Poppylicious The very fact you don't fit into either of those camps is what would make you a good manager!

I think I'd be a good manager, but I don't seem to fit in either of these two camps, so maybe I wouldnt be such a good one after all.

Will Henry grow up into a neurotic adult or have a nervous breakdown before his teens. As for your line manager, have you consider the possibility she was raise in a toxic family environment with parents similar to those of Henry's?

No. I just think she's an ineffectual line manager! She had the position foisted upon her, then she gained a bigger team and now she lacks the managerial skills to lead successfully.

@Poppylicious _As the Peter principle states, "In an organizational hierarchy every employee will rise or get promoted to his/her level of incompetence". She apparently has.

@josie_ I haven't heard that before. It does seem rather fitting!

@Poppylicious But if they know about it, I hardly believe they will ever change too. It is usually for their own convenience.
