I Walked!

United States
May 24, 2018 11:23pm CST
Tonight I walked through my apartment without the use of any crutches. This is the first time I've managed it since I broke my ankle back in March. My gait was very jerky and awkward, as I currently have a limp, but I managed to get all the way down the hall, through the living room and into the kitchen all on my own. I used my crutch on the way back because my ankle started hurting. The first thing I did when I discarded my crutch was sneak up behind Lister and scoop him up in my arms. He wasn't expecting it, since I haven't picked him up like that in months. He was not very pleased. When I was on my way back through the living room, he squatted next to the coffee table and batted at my crutch. Maybe he thinks if he knocks me off my feet again, he'll escape being coddled indefinitely? Anyway, this was a big step for me on my road to recovery from this injury, so I thought I would share.

Takes time to heal and it does feel awkward at first and although I did not break my ankle I did a most beautiful lateral fracture in the left foot. Good to see that you are recovering now though.

@Srbageldog It really hurt and I had to get up every day and be much the same in activity. There was no way I could explain how much it hurt when I put my foot down on the floor. Very well done and brave of you to use that foot again so soon.

Ouch, your fracture sounds extremely painful. Yes, it does take time to heal. Thank you.

@Srbageldog Do not overdo, the best is to do some walks and stop as soon as you feel tired.

I was so excited and proud to just walk across the apartment! But I am trying not to overdo it so I won't have any setbacks. I look forward to walking normally again!

Thank you! I have been walking more and more unassisted...but sometimes I still need my crutches, depending on how bad my ankle hurts. It's sooo awkward trying to walk with a limp! But, I'm hoping I'll be able to walk well enough to hit the Memorial Day Sale at the Goodwill on Monday. I haven't been shopping in so long...I told my sister if I go with her, I'll bring my crutches and whack people out of the way.

That is very good. Do feel free to do more walking but do rest whenever you are tired. Do not overstretch yourself

Thank you for the good advice. I am trying not to overdo it so I won't have any setbacks. If it starts hurting I resume using the crutches and find a place to sit and rest my ankle.

Thank you! I still have a slight limp and I can't walk as fast as I used to, but in time hopefully that will fade.

That's great. I once had crutches, but never used them. I did have a limp (and still do sometimes) when I fell down a cliff when I was younger.

Oh wow, you fell down a cliff? Did you break anything? Sorry to hear you still have a limp sometimes from that. I hope I don't always have a limp. I guess the bones in my ankle shifted slightly when I broke it, so I might wind up with arthritis later on in life from it.

Glad to know you're in high spirit. It cuts down on recovery time. But do take precaution so as not to cause any setbacks on the healing. Avoid jumping on trampolines or skipping rope.

Haha, I wouldn't do those things even if I had full use of both legs.
