Does your town belong to the Cittaslow movement?

When reading about the port town of Goolwa in South Australia I came across the term ‘Cittaslow’. I’d never heard the term before so off I went to Google and found that the organisation was founded in Tuscany, Italy. It is part of a cultural trend inspired by the slow food movement. Its goals include improving the quality of town life by slowing down its overall pace. Full membership is open only to towns with a population of less than 50,000. To gain membership, there is a self-assessment process against set goals. If a town scores at least 50% it can apply for admission. There is an annual membership fee. Ludlow was the first English town to gain admittance and Mold the first Welsh town. In 2014, the USA had three Cittaslow towns, all in California; Australia had three as did Canada. Have you ever heard of the Cittaslow movement before? The photo is of the beach at Goolwa.

It's a movement started in Italy "Citta" means "City" in Italian, so it means SlowCity. The goals of this movement include improving the quality of life in towns by slowing down.

@JudyEv The idea is good, people should try to slow down and enjoy life a bit more.

@judyev I vaguely remember this from somewhere. I am in full support. I think travel also ought to be Cittaslow - replace planes with steam driven trains and ships. Nice beach there you’ve got.

@JudyEv one of the Greek islands near the one I was on recently has no motorised vehicles. If you want to go anywhere it’s by donkey and cart.

And cars with horses! Everything is geared for speed these days unfortunately.

@xFiacre Some of the donkeys on the Greek island, and elsewhere, have a very tough life. Some organisation was trying to bring in a weight restriction for the donkeys that have to cart fat old tourists up some mountain or other.

I've not heard of it here, but I'd sure like to keep my town from getting any bigger than it is. But I'm missing what it's got to do with slow food.

@silvermist They only take towns of less than 50,000 people. Others can join a 'friends' apparently.

Matakana in the Rodney district is the only NZ cittaslow town according to Wikipedia. Towns have to be under 50,000 residents.
