Have any of you had a pet go missing for whatever reason?

When my cat where I lived before would go outside in the morning at first I was not sure if she would come back to me. There were times she would stay out for hours and I would go looking for her but she finally came home. One after while my dog and I were going up the stairs I decided to trust her and take her leash off so she could go the rest of the way up freely. Instead she turned back down and went outside. I looked all over for her and could not find her and thought she left me. After two hours there was a knock on the door. Apparently she followed this dog that was coming to visit our neighbor that lived upstairs and the neighbor knew she was mine so brought her back to me. There are some that have not found their pets but years later I heard some found their way home. Have any of you experienced anything like this and have a happy ending?

Except for my last dog, Pip, I've had dogs who got away from me. Sheba was a dog who saw the door open and she was out and gone for several hours, but always came home. Rascal was a dog who waited to find out if you remembered he was outside. He always stuck around home, until he noticed you didn't have your attention on him and he would take a walk. There were a couple times I had to bail him out of the humane center because I couldn't find him, but someone else did and took him to the humane center.

@Hannihar Pip never strayed once. Sheba came home, and yes, I'm glad I got Rascal back.

@just4him I thought at times that Sophie ran away but she did not. She has her own places where she can go and hide. I wish I could have a place like her here to hide from everything and everyone.

@just4him Valerie, I guess that is how it is with our furry ones. They think they are going to explore but then they get lost and cannot find their ways home. I am glad Pip came home. I am sorry about Rascal but glad you got him back.

Yes, several of our dogs escaped through the door and took off. We were lucky to find them visiting their doggy friends down the street. All of our cats have been house cats. Doodles is a house cat who enjoys going for walks around the property. He ran away once while I was planting flowers. It was so frightening, since we looked all over and had neighbors looking for him. He returned 2+ hours later panting and hot.

@Hannihar Oh, your poor dog! Doodles hopped over the stone wall on one side of the house. He probably went exploring in our neighbor's yard.

@DianneN I know how much Doodles means to you. I wonder where he was off to. Good thing he came back. I have no clue where my dog went. All I know is that she ate lots of garbage because when she was returned to me she threw up a lot.

When I was little, we had a dog that went missing .. after three years he appeared out of nowhere .. and was jumping up and down and running around while we're all shocked wondering where he's been all these years ...He looked healthy and obviously some people looked after him well ...If only dogs could talk I'm sure he would have told us about his three years adventure in some far away land .. lol ..the silly dog!..

@Hannihar No, we were still living in the same house .. and in those days, chip on pets were not heard of .. even now over there in the province in the Philippines , pets aren't chipped .. so if they go missing or if taken by others , they can't be traced..

@epiffanie Did you move so it was hard for him to find you? Did he have a chip? That was so great that he came back. I would have been shocked too. If animals could talk you find out what happened to him and how he got back to you.

@epiffanie That is very sad. I never put chips in my pets. The most Sophie got to was the roof infront of our building and that was because she can climb down to the porch below us and go over to the roof but cannot climb up again.

@Hannihar no but we keep on searching for them. My mom told me that if your pet loves the owner very dearly, they'll run away if they get sick. They don't want to be a burden to their owner.

when i was much younger, many years back, we had a cat that escaped us many times and even had to threaten some neighbors trying to keep him from us once. when we moved he was missing and learned later that a friend had moved in there and was treating him well. i guess he didn't want to stay away from that particular house.

My sister's cat went missing when she was staying with my parents. The cat actually fell thru the window screen which was not securely fastened. Fortunately, we found Bubba at our next door neighbors. My cat went out the front door a couple of times when my Dad opened the door. No one realized it until we went looking and found her under a bush in our front yard. Luckily, I never had a pet run away.

@dgobucks226 DB, I am so glad you found them. That was horrible that the cat fell through the window. Sophie, the cat I have now, once I found her way down the stairs on the way down to the storage area. She was curled up there. I guess when there are too many people here it gets to be too much for her.

It's interesting to know some pets are still able to go home. I have not experienced that before. We had a Labrador a few years ago, sometimes when we opened the gate, she would just run outside. We quickly went out and searched for her, as we were afraid she might be knocked down by cars. We were kinda protective. My kids did bring home some stray kittens, and after some time, the kittens just left without coming back. We let the kittens stay in the front yard, but not in the house.

@kaka135 When I was a kid my mother said she was allergic to animals so the ones we had lived in the basement or the garage and they ran away. I had a lab-husky in the 90's here and one day I was walking my dog and I took off her leash. She were on the stairs going up to our apartment and she took off and went down and out the building. She was gone two hours.

No I have never experienced that but found some of the missing ones in my place. Luckily they all were from my neighboring areas so their owners managed to find them. Or I informed them if I saw anyone looking for their missing ones. I have a large garden in three sides of my house so it happens time and again.
