2017 – Spoiler alerts A very intriguing and mysterious French science fiction drama in six thirty minute episodes. A French space mission crew in the near future believe that they are about to be the first team ever to reach Mars after a ten month voyage. On the brink of arriving they discover that an American ship has just beaten them to it, but the Americans have crashed so they head into Mars (crippling their own ship in the process) for what they think is now a rescue mission. They find a survivor, but he is not American. He is a Russian cosmonaut who was believed dead after his Soyuz capsule burnt up in Earth’s atmosphere in 1967, fifty years before. Why is he suddenly on Mars? He does not look any older than the day he vanished and his blood reveals extra layers of DNA helix, suggesting that he may be extra-terrestrial. Complex, intelligent, with beautiful captures of space-ships, satellites and the Martian landscape and a real edge of the seat ‘what is going on here?’ sense of strange. The show has hints of Stanislaw Lem’s Solaris. Arthur Chappell
