Wow, has it been two weeks since That Trip? I think I’m coming back to earth...well, at least I can see the ground now. It shouldn’t have been that good. After all, I was supposed to be in St. Louis on Wednesday to see my main man, Dale Watson. I didn’t go to that show. My back is in one of its “spells,” and standing for 3-4 hours on Wednesday, then standing again for another 3-4 hours for Robbie Fulks on Friday, would have been out of the question. I made a painful decision: skip the Dale show. I already had the days off, so I decided to take my sweet time in getting to St. Louis. As in, don’t sit in the car nonstop for 250 miles! It turned out to be a massive blessing. I took the long way (so long Supertramp didn’t even dream about it in “Take the Long Way Home”!), starting in a southerly direction to go west. I took the Western Kentucky Turnpike, deciding to travel to a part of the state I haven’t been to in a long, long time...if ever. I certainly don’t remember being any farther west in Kentucky than Madisonville (except passing through on I-24 on the way to St. Louis [imagine that!] from Nashville one year). I left Thursday morning with no agenda, no hotel reservation, and nowhere to be until 8 PM central time on Friday. What a wonderful feeling that was in itself!! Because I had no agenda, if I saw something that piqued my interest I stopped. That landed me at Bill Monroe’s birthplace, the Land Between the Lakes, the Superman statue in Metropolis, Illinois, and the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers in Cairo, Illinois. I’ve never experienced anything quite like that. It was a great time, not relying on time or the clock or a schedule. What a blessed time!

You had tunes cranked up in the car?

Actually, no, believe it or not. I used a lot of time praying while I was driving.

I agree. One of the things I did for myself for my birthday this year was stop wearing a watch. It’s sad that even vacations, which used to be times to unwind and relax, are structured now. A co-worker is going to Disney World in July, and it seems like every minute of his vacation is planned. Sheesh, that sounds exactly like boot camp to me: I was in Orlando, but every waking moment was controlled.

It is always like that when you don't look at your watch and you look around with no rushed feelings. It must have been fascinating to see Bill Monroe's birthplace. the land between the lake and the Super Man statue in Metropolis. Usually we go in the school holidays and cant' afford a long time sightseeing. In Europe accommodation can be very expensive so we limit the time in pricey places. When we visited Iceland we camped in a tent to save money. In St Petersburg in Russia we rushed around to see as much as possible.

We had no time constraints when we were in France, no timetable to worry about and it was just heavenly. Glad your trip was similar.

That sounds so nice. That is the kind of trip my husband and I should take sometime, no agenda, no hotel reservation, just go and see what happens.

The lake looks clean and blue. Glad you had the time on the road to clear your head. I know it did for me back in the days of my long distance driving.
