A beautiful song with a sad memory

I was searching for songs to add to my playlist and came across "Love Remains." Have you heard it? It's a rather old country song, but so pretty. When our son married his first wife, I sang it at their wedding. I changed a few of the lyrics and it went well. Five years later we were at the same church for her funeral. She had a massive heart attack at 34. Their little boy, Nathan, was almost two at the time. My husband and I were in Arkansas when she died and of course, flew right home. We picked Nathan up at their house to bring home with us so our son could make all the arrangements. Nathan lived with us for the next seven years. I quickly went from being grandma to being mama. It was heartbreaking hearing him cry at night for his mama...all I could do was cry with him and hold him close. Our son was as good a single dad as he could be, but with his job, he couldn't care for a baby full time. He would come for supper when he could and spent every day he was off work with Nathan. I know I've written about this before, but the song just brought it all back. Nathan is now almost 15 and the love of my life. I adore all our grandkids, but Nathan and I will always have a special bond. I'm thankful he only lives about an hour away with his dad. God has been so merciful. None of us would have survived without His love and strength.

What a beautiful song, I had not heard it until I just searched and found it on youtube. I'm very thankful for reading this. I'm sure that there are no words to describe how your son and grandson feel for your being there, just like there are really no words that you have on your end. Just thankfulness, right? I have a brother who was left a single father to 3 little ones, and I was his leaning post, I took on the burden of stocking his fridge and pantry to feed the children, took them in when I could, 2 of the 3 of them even had bedrooms at our house, and lastly, I was the one saddled with the burden of calling our parents, who were on vacation at the time. Of course they had a flight home within minutes and landed about 8 hours later-their pockets were deeper then ours were, and our family needed to be all together when that happened. I'm sure you understand. Reading this brought back all of those feelings and that was 2006.

@1creekgirl My sister-in-law always had los self esteem issues, but she had a bit of a breakdown after a miscarriage between her first and second successful pregnancies. After that she never seemed whole to me, and it scared me. I used to keep such close tabs on her, and my brother. Their son would often ask to come and stay at our place for a few days here and there, going back to when he was only a couple of years old. He seemed to thrive on the consistency and even-keel that our household offered. We live about an hour away from my brother now. His kids vary in age from 14 up to 20 years. My brother has dated other women, but his kids are his priority and I doubt that he'll ever marry again. I remember when our niece was only 4 she was staying over and asked me to show her how to make that special chicken that she liked so much. It was just chicken parmasean, but she loved it. So I made a little production line, a bowl of beaten eggs, a plate of half bread crumbs and half parm cheese and the casserole dish. And I showed her how to move the chicken along from the egg to the dry mixture to the casserole. A few days later that dear sweet little girl asked her Daddy for these things and to everyone's amazement she prepped the meat and then asked Daddy to turn the oven on to 350 and to put the casserole into it until supper time. My brother lacked in the kitchen skills department, but his little girl has helped him so much. It sounds like your son's first wife was an angel, I hope that he can live a content life in her shadow, as I wouldn't imagine anything to compare. Not everyone gets that kind of a person. Hopefully his relationship with his son will sustain him and remind him of the beauty that his wife brought to his life. And maybe he'll be lucky enough to see some of her magic and beauty live on in his grandchildren-wouldn't that be a wonderful blessing?

@1creekgirl Our daughter passed away from heart disease when she was younger, and they told me no more babies, my body couldn't withstand it. And we always wondered why, until our niece and nephews needed another "home" and then we stopped asking why. Our son feels very close to those cousins of his. I hope that Nathan has children of his own one day-wouldn't it be nice to see some of his mother's features in his babies?

@Juliaacv It truly will be a blessing if Nathan has children some day. What precious memories you have of the times with your little ones.

I am sorry to hear about Nathan. I know how tough is to live without a mother at this age. I know this because I lost my mom at 4 years.

Thank you, Courtney. I'm so thankful we were able to take care of Nathan. He was a premie and had major back surgery when he was four. So we've all had some major events, but he's a healthy teen now.

He really doesn't remember her (he was almost two), but he thinks he does because of the photos and videos we've shown him. He's my sweetheart.
