How does your garden grow?

We have some corn and sunflowers (along with green beans and snow peas) going at the preschool, but the corn is growing slowly. I have a hunch that there's not much nitrogen in the soil there, so I'm going to have to score some Miracle Gro Quick Start and help the corn plants out. How are your gardens faring so far this Spring?

I have sprouts so that's a good thing. We'll see if it becomes a harvest. Last year I was very disappointed.

Were wee critters the issue?

@porwest That happens here sometimes. I always get snow peas and green beans, though.

@TheHorse I had a little trouble with critters at first last year but even once I got things going finally, think it was just too hot and dry. Last year all I got were plants but nothing to eat. lol

@DesirousDreamer I'm going to let them get as big as possible in the little Dixie cups on my balcony.

I too think they could do with some nitrogen. You must try and make your own compost from kitchen waste.

They used to have some good compost there, but they got away from it.

@TheHorse May is the month of strawberries, the locals call them "magiosters" from Maggio (May).

That's an early harvest, by my standards. I do see some strawberries starting to form at the preschool.

@TheHorse I wish we could have a garden but I could see my Sophie having fun throwing things on our porch and laughing at me when I have to clean it up. So, no garden for us.

Isn't it harmful for the soil?

My strawberry plants are lookinq quite healthy, lots of blossoms, no fruit yet. Peas have started up but the beans are being recalcitrant. Potatoes are doing great. Rhubarb's not too bad considering it's just part of the root from my Hamilton garden. Tomato seedlings are doing better since I moved them outside.

Thanks. Where were you at the time? Corn can grow pretty well here in California.

My indoor plants are still doing well. My poinsettia I bought this past Christmas still has a couple red petals on it, but they won't last too much longer. It's also growing, and will match the plant from the previous year soon. I just might need to re-pot both plants as I learned the poinsettia is a tree. Your plants are looking good, with the exception of the corn. Miracle Gro should help.
