Dinner Under the Stars in Australia

On the second night of the train trip we enjoyed a special treat - dinner in the desert under the night sky at Alice Springs. It was a bit chilly but so enjoyable. We were driven in bus loads from the train to the old telegraph Station, famous for being the original location of Alice Springs when the telegraph line to connect Australia to the rest of the world was being developed in the 1870s. All the food was locally produced, and the wine and beers were also from the nearest suppliers. A band played and the train staff looked after us. Because of the size of the train, this was the only time there was enough space for us all to eat together at the same time. At one stage in the evening a man told us stories about all the star constellations, starting with the southern cross. The sky was clear, as we were miles from polluted civilization, and the stars seemed large and huge. It was a crescent moon that evening. Unfortunately this photo was taken early in the evening so you can't yet see the stars. We had lots of fun, laughter, good food and good company. Dinner in the desert under the stars was definitely a memorable occasion.

Unfortunately this photo was taken early in the evening so you can't see the stars. I think I'll add that in to the text above.

Lots of history in Alice Springs. I've had the privilege of seeing the Southern Cross when I lived on Guam for over a year. It was amazing. It looks like you had a wonderful night to view it when all the stars came out. It sounds like an enjoyable evening for everyone.

How nice that would have been. And don't the stars seem so close when you're out there with no other light source?

Having dinner under the stars sounds fantastic to me. You will remember that for a long time I think with the story telling and the laughter. In the southern hemisphere I have noticed lots of stars in the sky. The night atmosphere in the Australian outback must be amazing. I am pleased that the food was from a local supply and the drinks from a nearby area.

I couldn't help but notice the beautiful pink protea in the middle of the table. They are our national flower and my daughter will be using the pink proteas as her table flowers at her wedding. Your tales have been enjoyed and the desert quiet and evening sky is a priceless venture.
