Does heavy metal music count as oldies?

I was listening to Metallica's nothing else maters song when my five year old rolled her eyes and asked to listen to something other than "oldies". I told my husband and was like the oldest is like the 1950's stuff my mom listened to. He's like no honey, they were oldies to you. To them meaning our daughters, my music is the oldies. Did I really become my mom? Is Metallica reallybthe oldies? Haha

Heavy metal music is better than listening to rap and hip hop music.

@Daelii I don't mind some of it if it has a good beat but it's not my first choice. I like a lot of different types of music.

Hah I'm a huge fan of anything with a beat. There are all kinds of metal music. A lot even tackles social issues like the 60's protest songs.

It's classic rock to my kids and I. We call 80s music the classics. Disco is just disco and 50s and 60s music is oldies to us.

@Daelii aren't we close in age? I'm 37 going on 38. I grew up on 80s hair bands and east coast west coast rap, and pop music. lol don't forget 90s alternative rock and grunge

... You are now making me feel older! I may have to rethink my " I'm 27 and holding" age if I admit to growing up listening to 80's rock n roll

Ozzy will always be my favorite, then a lot of heavy metal. I'm also a fan of techno, Gaelic / anything with bagpipes, etc. I can even line dance... So :)

Well it is considered Classic now. I don't even know how that happened either. What do they call the "oldies" that we called the "oldies" from the 50's and 60's. Maybe they shouldn't classify it since it is still played and the band is still making music.

@Daelii My kids always refer to my era as if it was the stone ages. But the same will be true of them when they get to be my age.

I think young people now consider anything over 25 years to be old.

yes it is. i remember 30 years back when my mom would say, i was too old to be listening to such music as ACDC etc, and i told her, i don't think so cause Angus Young happened to be in his 50's at the time but i still love that music today and my moms oldies like Fats Domino etc.

If "the oldest" is the stuff from the 50s, I'd hate to think what all that stuff from the 30s and 40s on my iPod is. "Oldies" used to mean 50s and 60s music. I have an "oldies" playlist on my iPod, and that's what it is: 50s and 60s rock and roll. Now it's subjective. I see kids call Stone Temple Pilots "oldies" and I just reach for the Geritol.....

There is heavy metal that has been around since the 70s, so it would be old to today's youth.

Olivia and I had a discussion about it and said: it's difficult to consider music as oldies when the singer or band is still making music today.

To your daughter they might be oldies, to us they will always be "Classics".
