Thank you to all our service men and women that served our great country

I can never thank all our military, both with us today and all those that have fallen. My dad was a medic in World War 2 and wounded. He received many medals for his bravery and received the Bronze Star for his bravery. He also received the Purple Heart. The award was given for heroic achievement in Germany as he was a medic and took care of many soldiers that were hurt. My avatar on this site is my mom, dad and me, in 1943. Besides that letter and medal, he received numerous other medals which I gave, at his funeral, to the other members of my family. My sister and brother got one each and the rest I gave to all the grandchildren. There were about 10 more. I thought they should know about their grandfather and great grandfather.

Your dad was a very brave man and deserves to be remembered. I hope the children treasure their bits of history. I served, in a small way, from 1963 to 1965, got out just before Vietnam heated up.

@ramapo17 Yes, my first day in the Army was the day JFK was shot and I got an early out for college in September 1965.

@JamesHxstatic Wow, I remember that day very clearly and where I was standing. I was at work in a beauty salon with a customer in my chair. I think many people remember what they were doing then. I was glued to the tv after that.

You were lucky you got out then. I had a lot of friends that were in that war. I graduated high school then and some of the guys went right in the military.

Yes it is. Now I started worrying about my grandson as he joined the Navy last summer and just got his orders and he will be going away this summer. I don't look forward to that. I haven't seen him since last year but knowing he will be going so far away makes me worry more. I guess that is what grandma's are for.

@arthurchappell Luckily with all the technology we have these days, I do text message him every week and when he has time he does reply. That makes me happy.

Vice nice post Nancy. My Dad is a veteran also. He fought the Japanese in the Pacific and was wounded in the leg by shrapnel from a bomb. He also received a purple heart. We owe our soldiers (so many who sacrificed their lives) a debt of gratitude for restoring freedom to the world again.

@mlgen1037 Thank you again. He was a very unique person and always laughing and joking with people even when he was in pain. Toward the end of his life he was using a cane and fell down so many times when we went up but he was so stubborn and would not let me do things for him. (I wonder where I get it, hahaha).

You can and should be very proud of your father. Most of the new generation all over the world have no idea about the real history of their country. That was nice of you to give the grand children your father's numerous medals,so that they would know about his service to the country. Both photos are nice.

You can be very proud of your dad. I am glad to know that people still remember just what Memorial Day is all about. It should always be passed down from generation to generation.
