Hello MyLot! I hope we all had a nice Memorial Day weekend. For those not in the US. - Memorial Day is widely regarded as the "kick off" to summer. Many people celebrate by cooking out, going to the lake or the cabin, playing outdoors, etc. However it is a day to respect the veterans who served. It has taken me a long time to sort out how I feel. I think war is a shame and that it (issues) should never come to nation-wide wars. But yet, - we still do have war. I feel bad for everyone effected by the reaches of war, including the soldiers of both sides. I had 1 relative in the American Civil war. And 1 in WWI. No one more recent though. As for my weekend it was hectic but fun, including cookouts, friends, swimming, dance class. Photo: Pixabay

I never had a family member die while serving, which is what yesterday was for. But I had I believe three people serve, before I was even a thought.. and now have one cousin as a military cop. my weekend was just hanging out with / babysitting my niece and nephew.

We spent the weekend at home with lots of attempted underground sprinkler repair, but ate well so it was good.

@FayeHazel No they were not. Hiring someone is quite expensive too, so we may go back to the hose and sprinkler like @LadyDuck did.

I went on a picnic with my boyfriends family for memorial day and did some hiking. It was pretty hot here weather wise but it was a good day. I always remember the war veterans past and present on memorial day also.

That picnic sounds nice. I know, seems unseasonably warm, doesn't it? Remembering the veterans is nice. I know sometimes I overlook that aspect of it, and that is too bad

Memorial Day is a day to give remembrance to those who lost their lives serving our country. My dad, two uncles, and my brother-in-law were veterans of WWII and the Korean War. It's impressive that you had a relative in the Civil War. None of my family arrived in the US until the early 1900s. So glad you had a nice weekend! Sounds terrific!

Oh wow! That is awesome about your dad , uncles and brother in law. We didn't have anyone in anything from WWII on. At least in close family. Lots of farmers. Thanks! It's an interesting story - Frederick (I think a many greats uncle) - was a supply wagon driver and was in for the whole civil war

@DianneN Thanks, it's a cool thing. I know it bothers my mom that he doesn't have a bronze star marker. I think she is looking up some of that side of the family to get him one

@FayeHazel the day will be celebrated with lots of rallies and protests against the present administration. it is already the routine here. the national heroes are not remembered, but the present political problems are.

Soldiers do a lot for a country and we should respect them from the heart. They deserve it. Wars do no good but they happen. It is a harsh truth. Well have fun!

True. It took me along time to sort that out. I dislike the war. I don't dislike the soldier. - they are worthy of respect.

We don't have memorial day in India. But I remember it from the long years I spent in US. My husband's clients are from US. So he had a free evening on Monday and we could go out for dinner after a long time.

We need to remember our veterans who gave so much for us to remain a free country. That gets lost in the cookouts, and getting summer started.
