I Overdid It Yesterday

Yesterday I went out with my sister and parents to check out the 50 percent off Memorial Day Sale at the Goodwill. I got a pile of books for only $7, but man was the line long. It wrapped clear around half of the store. I was in my walking boot and using one crutch to help me along, and I'm glad I had both of them because we ended up standing in line for an entire hour. My ankle was killing me by the time we got up to the register to pay. Afterwards I went over to my parents house for some barbecue, and my youngest brother and his girlfriend also joined us. I took my boot off and walked around in my socks for most of the afternoon, but I stuck to using the crutch so I wouldn't have to bear all of my weight on my right ankle. I ended up being over at their house for way longer than I intended. My mom was nice enough to give me a foot rub because my poor injured foot/ankle was barking. When my boyfriend finally picked me up around 10 p.m., we had to run to Walmart to grab some wet cat food, as well as do some grocery shopping. Thankfully I was able to ride one of their scooters, which made getting around the store a lot easier. Unfortunately, we saw my boyfriend's biological dad roaming around the store, so we had to dash in a different direction to avoid being seen, as he will yack your ear off for hours if he catches you...and he is always drunk and incoherent, so you just end up standing there nodding without any idea of what he's actually saying. Although we ended up running into an old family friend who works at Walmart, and stopped and chatted for a good half an hour, anyway. It was nice seeing her, though (can't say the same when we run into the boyfriend's father, ha ha.) Then my boyfriend started getting hangry so we hurried and got our groceries and headed to the front of the store to pay. There was only one checkout lane open and of course the line stretched a mile long. We didn't get home until after 11:30 p.m., and by then I was really hurting. So today I have been trying to take it easy and not put too much weight on my ankle. I've walked through the apartment a couple times without my crutch, but other than that I have been using it. I don't want a setback when things have been going so well. Last night I felt pretty depressed over how much pain I was in, and I started wondering if I'd ever be able to resume my normal activities without feeling any pain. Maybe I will never be able to walk long distances again without my ankle acting up. I love walking around town with my sister when we have our outings, and the notion that maybe I won't ever be able to do that again without suffering the consequences really got me down. I am glad I got out of my apartment yesterday, though. It's depressing sometimes to just be holed up here, unable to do much of anything. It's been nearly 3 months since I fell down the stairs and fractured my ankle in two places. I thought I would be all healed by now, since I was told it should only take 6 weeks to heal. I guess I need to remember to take things slow. And try to avoid long lines at the store.

Whoa! It was definitely a busy weekend for you especially yesterday. You definitely want to take it easy today and now forward. That was a way long for you to be standing, and walking. Very sweet of your mom to give you a foot rub Rest your legs/feet/ankles girl!!

I have been resting since then, and am starting to feel a bit better. I guess no more going to the Goodwill (at least not on 50% off day) until my ankle is 100% better.

That is awesome you got all those books! I used to go to a salvation army years ago and the books were 10% of the listed price so a $6.99 book would be 69ยข. The guy at the counter was awesome and when I went up with a cart full of books he would put them all in a big garbage bag and only charge me $2. I don't think he wanted to ring up all those books in the cash register and was obviously very happy someone was interested in the books since there was HUGE amounts sitting around no one buys. Books on sale are like Christmas present to me. That is so sweet your mother rubbed your foot for you! Try to think positively I don't think you will be unable to walk forever. It might take along time healing but you will get your mobility back! Have you been back to the doctor over the slow healing time?

@Srbageldog sounds like physical therapy could be helpful for you. I won't rub people's feet either. My boyfriend asks me to often and I refuse. It grosses me out so bad. For my son or daughter I would do it but I can't stomach it for anyone else.

@shaggin My dad used to make me rub his feet with lotion every Friday night while we watch TGIF when I was a kid...he would always tell me to get the jam between his toes. One night it finally dawned on me how gross it was...and I have refused to rub feet ever since. I will rub my boyfriend's feet if he has socks on, but otherwise I won't touch them.

That is an awesome deal you got from the Salvation Army! I love finding good deals on books. I always say you can never have too many books! (Now to find a place to store all of them...I need to get another bookcase, right now I have bagfuls of books sitting around in our office.) Yes, it was sweet of her. My boyfriend refuses to rub feet so I can never get him to do it. I know eventually I should be able to walk again, but I wonder if I'll always have pain in my ankle when I walk long distances? My brother broke his ankle years ago and I guess it still bothers him. I hope that won't be the case for me. I have not heard from the doctor, and he didn't require another followup appointment...but I will call him in another week if I still haven't heard back about Physical Therapy. For now I'm doing range of motion exercises at home. My mom showed me some new ones (and gave me a tennis ball to roll under the arch of my foot), which have really helped! I haven't used my crutch around the apartment for the last couple days.

You can't allow yourself to think negatively. Maybe you'll have problems walking around for long periods of time, or maybe you won't have any problem at all. Maybe it will just ache a little when it rains, and that's it. You might ask the doctor when they take the cast off if there is any ankle exercises or strengthening things you can do to ensure you regain the full use of your ankle the way it was before your fell. I've stubbed toes, broken toes and fingers as well. I've scorched my ankle, I've sprained fingers and toes. I've never had to wear a cast because of an injury and I certainly hope I never do. Good luck, and I hope the cast comes off soon. In the mean time, take it easy and try to have less full days of walking around. I know yesterday couldn't be helped of course. Oh and kudos for getting a pile of books for $7

The cast is off, although I still have a walking boot. My fractures are technically healed, but when I go out to do anything I still wear the boot because I'm not able to walk very well (or without pain) yet. I guess the ligaments and tendons haven't fully healed yet. My ankle shifted slightly when I broke it, which may cause arthritis later on. I have been doing some range of motion exercises at home, and my mom showed me some more to do (she does range of motion with patients in the nursing home she works at.) But I am supposed to be sent for physical therapy...it's been three weeks and I have not been scheduled for that yet. The doctor said it might take a while for my insurance to authorize it. Thank you for the kind words. I know now that I'm not physically ready to resume all normal activities...I suppose it was rather foolish to stand in that line for an hour, but after a point it was like "I've waited this long, I'm not getting out of line now!" I am happy with the books I got, at least. I found some by two of my favorite authors.

@Srbageldog That makes it a very good deal then! If you don't hear back soon I might try to touch base with the doctor again. Maybe the doctor, or the insurance company has dropped the ball.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, it was a good deal! Good idea. If I haven't heard anything in another week, I'll give the doctor a call.

if youre with someone, have them stand in line for you while you sit somewhere else. stores usually have a handicapped register opened at all times, especially walmarts. was theres closed?

The Goodwill doesn't have a handicapped register (which..you think they would, since they are always asking for donations to help employ handicapped individuals,) and Walmart only had one lane open...which was the express lane, but with so many people in line, the line wasn't moving too quickly. Fortunately I was on a scooter in Walmart.

Sounds like you enjoyed your long-weekend. I hate it when someone has to yack at me endlessly. Hope your ankle feels much better

I hate it too. And why is it always stupid or ignorant people who seem to yack the most? Thank you, it was feeling better until I walked on it too much yesterday. I guess I will have to rest for the next few days because it's swollen again.

I was foolish to venture out like that on Monday. I have been patient for 3 months, but I just really wanted to get out. Now I know not to overdo it like that again.

@Srbageldog Don't blame yourself, I think it happens to everyone. We are inpatient and we think that we must be healthy again after so long months.

I really do feel for you. When I broke my ankle, it was a simple break, but it sure hurt! I moved in with my mom while it was healing so I'd have enough help to be able to stay off my feet more. I can't even imagine standing in line as long as you did hurting like that. Now if you came to my house I'd give you tons of books to read for free and you wouldn't have to stand in line at all. My house is the equivalent of a used books store.

My fractures are technically healed, but my ankle and heel are still very, very sore (and hurt about the same as before the fracture was healed.) I'm supposed to be sent for physical therapy, but it's been a few weeks already and I still haven't received the call scheduling it. This was the first time I (foolishly) ventured out like that since breaking my ankle. Thank you for the kind words. My house is quickly turning into a used book store as well...I love to read.

I know how it is when you want to get out but you cannot. However, you did do a bit too much yesterday so today you should put your foot up and give it a good rest. Watch some movies you like or something that will entertain you.

I did rest all day yesterday and most of today. My ankle is feeling a bit better now, but still hurts now and then when I move it a certain way or when I walk on it. The fractures are technically healed, but I guess the tendons and ligaments might not be.
