Walking sasuages

I always thought feet swelling was a complaint of senior years. Not so, My Lot, not so. It seems to me this happened to me last year too. The weather got hot and my feet and legs swelled up. Sure I had heard of people talking about this - but let me tell you - if you haven't experienced it yourself it is really annoying. I'm not complaining yet, because it isn't painful exactly, only annoying. You step down and your feet feel hard. Anyone know any home remedies? I tried sleeping with my feet elevated - it helped, but it didn't take it all away. Therefore - I call my feet walking sausages. Does anyone else have colorful names for their own body parts? ;-) Photo: Pixabay

Get rid of the salt in your diet. That's what I did, and my sausages are no longer. Salt retains water and that swells the feet and ankles so they look like those sausages.

@FayeHazel I used salt in everything too, until I cut it out completely. The only sodium I get now is in some foods that have it naturally. Now, I can taste it when there's salt in everything. It feels like overload to me.

@just4him Kind of like sweets I imagine. When I cut out most of sugar.... then for awhile stuff that has alot of sugar seems annoyingly sweet

I haven't had that happen to me, but the others have offered good advice. I'd definitely eliminate salt and keep my feet up with cool compresses on them. Those sausages do look great.

I sometimes have poor blood circulation and I think the sensation is similar, but I've never experienced swelling. Whatever works for blood circulation and water retention should help. And well done sleeping with your feet elevated, I have a hard time falling asleep in any position.

Thanks for the head's up. Sorry to hear about the poor circulation, too. That sounds difficult to deal with as well. Likewise, sleeping is a difficult talent

When I tore my calf muscle a month ago, I had to sleep with my feet elevated. Let me tell you, that's not an easy thing to do! Anyway, I don't have any advice for reducing swelling in the feet and legs, but I wish you good luck with finding a remedy.

@FayeHazel I just recently got off the crutches and I'm finally walking again without a limp. So it's nice to finally be healthy and all healed up for once. Which means it's time for me to go out and do something wild and crazy to get hurt again! LOL

@mlgen1037 Thanks for asking. I'm much better now. The weather cooled a bit here and it seems to only be bad in really hot weather. Go figure huh?

You should get come compression socks. This is what I have and wear them.Do you have varicose veins there.Compression stockings are specially designed to apply pressure to your lower legs, helping to maintain blood flow, and reduce discomfort and swelling. They may be prescribed by your GP if you have a condition that causes poor blood flow in your legs, such as: varicose veins (swollen and enlarged veins)

Use ice for swelling, cut back on salt. Hvae you changed shoes lately? When I drove for 2 hours my feet swelled double but a good nights sleep was what I needed, and to move more. Swelling in the feet and legs are a sign of a bad heart, meaning a low heart rate and can lead to congestive heart failure, with CHF usually you have what seems like a cold, chest congestion. When this happens you need a pacemaker. I used to tend a lady that had this and got the pacemaker, because I have a low heart rate the doc thought I was sick but I am super active and no swelling.

Ah didn't think of the ice. But it would feel good. TO be honest I haven't switched shoes out in a long time. Whoops. Hm. I hope it isn't cardiac. No congestion here. I hope you don't have it either. No swelling is a good sign

First thing to do is find out what is causing the swelling.

Never called my feet sausages. But I get your gist. Hope you are able to get the swelling down and not have to walk around like that. It seems it WOULD be annoying.

I have only had swelling from ankle injuries and keeping the elevated really helped. Though I was told to keep them above my heart which can make it hard to sleep. Maybe massaging them will help by getting the blood circulating.
