Don't write off elders, they save you monies

It has become fashionable in India to throw out parents or at least pack them off to old age homes. I for one find most children who do that S.T.U.P.I.D R.E.T.A.R.D.S. Ok...there are indirect tax benefits of maintaining elderly folks. Push savings on their name, and they get tax free income, while we don't pay taxes for earning monies to look after them. The choice is pretty much between paying to the tax department or paying to parent. It is all legal. The deposits could have me as nominee, so I am no loser either. How good is that? But more seriously, I have suffered massive cramps in my belly the last few weeks. Yeah...from 7th May to be precise. What did I eat? Well nothing. I had nice cold sugarcane juice with extra and extra ice in it. It is very hot out here, and every time the cramps came up I drank more cold juice, and ate ice, worsening my condition. I suffered with constipation, which is unusual. Gases. I stopped pickles. No improvement. I stopped lime juice. No improvement. I decide I needed to see a physician and just at the nick of the time, we visited this aunt who told me not to drink cold water and see if it helps. Four days I drank water at room temperature and everything is smoothly oiled again. Don't you just love elderly folks? They help you out of that pain...come on.

I am surprised you did not know that very cold drinks give stomach cramps. We have no tax benefits at all taking care of elders and if we place investments in their names we have to pay the succession tax the day they are no more.

I truly did not know about cold water giving stomach cramps. LOL Its been hell last few weeks. LOL Actually, it is not specific tax benefit. Now this year if I earn 500000 INR, if I transfer to dad's name, his tax slab is low, next year, I would be paying 165000 but dad would not be paying anything on his name. So by keeping dad with me, I save 165000 next year. His expenses are not as much. LOL. In addition, I can transfer another 150000 which dad can dump in tax saving instruments. Next year I save another 45000 INR for it. In addition, if I buy him medical insurance, I get rebate in tax subject to a maximum of 50000 INR. In addition, if I invest in fixed deposit that fetches him 50000 INR per month, I save next year, 16500 next year. That is only one parent! Having parents is financial bonanza. All those gifts to parents are tax free and perfectly legal.

@vandana7 We have no benefits at all keeping parents with us. In Italy you must prove that your parents are in need and not self sufficient to obtain some advantages. They will let you hire a care givers and you can deduct the fees from your taxes. This works only if your parents have low income.

@LadyDuck Yes, if parents have low income. Usually they have low income because they did not have as many avenues to invest, nor as many job opportunities. So they went on in low paying jobs fearing loss of this income as well. Outsourcing made India quite rich. The comfort levels we are experiencing is because of outsourcing. Still I am against it because it feels we have cheated Americans. The jobs that have come here are jobs Americans can do and are willing to do.

Grandmas home remedies are anyday better than medicines and it is nice having them around. Its only stupid people who dont like elderly folks in the house. And those who do keep the elderly in the house is only as baby sitters for their kids!!!!

That is so sad. Isn't it? There is so much love in their hearts. We humans are the most stupid ones of all species. We want love. When we get from our folks and even animals we don't want them. The most reliable ones we don't want!!! Insane. That is like letting go of gold, for some artificial jewelry.

It is pathetic that some people are happy to leave their parents for silly things. They feel no remorse for doing that.

That is so invaluable advise. I have not had any grandparents both maternal and paternal were gone before my parents were married. And I lost my mother around five and a half, so pretty much hostel girl, and self brought up in many ways. I truly did not know how beneficial warm water is. :)

I'm still young and find it hard to believe that my parents will be old and "disposable" someday.

I have found so much value in their thinking and simple advices ...I mean if I would have gone to a doctor, he would send me for tests that would cost both time and money. Then too he would be doing permutations and combinations of medication. Some may and other may not agree with me. But now I am truly out of woods thanks to the simple hint. I wonder how much more is there in them for me to learn.

I stopped drinking very cold water some time ago - the things we ingest is partly to blame for many of our ailments. Unless they are in need of special medical care which I cannot provide - I would prefer to have my elderly parents live with me.

I should have known this actually. Because when I used to return from college, on the way back I used to drink some aerated drink. I used to be so thirsty. Back then I thought it was aerated stuff that got me into health problem. Me too...I wish my father never gets sick to an extent that he needs special medical care.
