The devil made me listen: #3 "Runnin' with the Devil" Van Halen (1978)

“Runnin’ with the Devil” was my introduction to Van Halen and I bought the 45. The group formed in 1972 in Pasadena and became another superstar Southern California product. In the distinct vocals of David Lee Roth: “I live my life like there’s no tomorrow And all I’ve got, I’ve had to steal Least I don’t need to beg or borrow Yes, I’m livin’ at a pace that kills” From their self titled debut album, “Runnin’ with the Devil” only charted at Billboard #84 yet seemed a bigger hit. The band never explained what the song’s meaning was except it was inspired by an Ohio Players song of the same name. Some thought it was satanic themed. The more plausible meaning was life of a touring band. The opening sounds of car horns were recordings of the band’s own car horns.

Gene Simmons from Kiss played a role in setting up their first recording session after seeing them in concert. Uncomplicated straight up rock n' roll with a little David Lee Roth squealing, lol.
