Lake Lanier Runs Over

We've had so much rain that Lake Lanier is running over.( We get our water from Lake Lanier) They are leaving the dam open for a couple of weeks to release the water. During that time the Chatahooche river is off limits for recreation. No boats, Inner tubes or swimming. It will be a big disappointment for everyone looking forward to boating and swimming. We don't go there as often as we used to but they have a beautiful long walking trail along the river. At least people can still walk along the river unless it overflows and floods the trail as it sometimes does.

I like walking on the river too. We used to walk on the Chatahoochee often. The last time it flooded water ran out in the fields and people were warned not to go near the water.

@ Mign. I wouldn't live near a river or lake that overflows. Too dangerous and you could lose your home in a flood.

@RubyHawk oh my! But the when it floods, it does not affect houses? I think living in such places is nice when it is serene but when it rains, it seems like it cannot contain itself. I forget to mention about your painting. That is wonderful. I like it, Ruby.

My mom grew up in the small town of Chattahootchee on the Florida/Georgia border, where Lake Seminole is. There is a dam on the border, and so the lake was artificially created by damming the area where the Chattahottchee and Flint Rivers converge to form the Appalachicola River. So, by releasing water from Lake Lanier, it will all eventually end up in Lake Seminole, which means they'll have to open that dam and send more water down the Appalachicola.

@RubyHawk Florida, Alabama and Georgia are already locked up in a water war in the court system, I believe it's going to be heard by the Supreme Court, if it hasn't already. As water becomes more and more scarce, we're going to see more states and communities fighting each other for water.

That's Very true. I know Georgia gets complaints when dams have to be opened and also when water is short and water isn't released. I understand both sides but I wonder what we can do when long droughts occur and we're all short of water. We'll have less water as time goes on. It's going to happen.

@moffittjc I know, water will be less available in all the states. I can't see an answer.

You brought back memories, we visited a few houses on the Lake Lanier when we planned to move to the United States.

@RubyHawk We loved that area, we live uphills here, no risk of flooding.

It's a beautiful place. We're not quiet as far into the mountains although we have lots of hills and trees.

@LadyDuck We also live uphill. We have a nice wide creek below us that sometimes overflows but it still doesn't get near us.

That sounds like it is going to cause quite a dent in the beginning of summer fun in your area, Ruby. I imagine a lot of people will be disappointed.

Our water level gets low at times when we have little rain. Car washes close an no lawns can be watered That hasn't happened in a few years.

You must have had a lot of rain from Alberto to have the lake run over.

I suppose the up side is that it's only for a few weeks but even so, people will miss having fun on the lake.

I believe people can still get in the lake, it's the river with all the extra water washing down that's dangerous. People like to kayak and tube down the river.
