My Little Buddy

I live in Florida so lizards often visit me. They hang upside down on the wall in back of my desk and computer. They just watch me type. I miss them when they are not here. The gecko in the photo comes closer when I call him so he is my buddy.

I have not seen any of the huge ones but I have seen pictures. Some of them can inflict a lot of damage on people or pets.

I like them. Some people hate them and are scared until someone removes them from the house. People say they eat soft parts like your lips or earlobes. That never happened to me.

My little pets. They are a lot less trouble than a dog or cat. They are the guardians of my computer usage. They just hang there upside down an stare at me. I do want to get a dog though.

@akalinus Yes, they are easier to handle and they will look after your computer without worrying about anything.

They are all cute and I can tell them apart. You would think they would all look alike, but they don't. They have personalities, too.

@buenavida I didn't name them. I don't know why, maybe because I can't tell if they are male or female. I think I called one Charlie, a name that could be either feminine or masculine. Who knows these days?

I really like having them around. I never had lizards in my house until I moved to Florida. There are lots of creatures here. I once took a shower with a tree frog hopping from wall to wall.

@RubyHawk Now that is different. I never saw one with purple stripes. I saw a skinny black one and one that was completely clear but could not get a photo of either one. There are all green ones here and some have leopard spots.

@akalinus Do you feed him at all? What do they eat? So, he just sits there and hangs with you? Has he ever come close so you can pet him?

They never come close enough for me to pet. They eat bugs and there are plenty of bugs in Florida. They like to be in houses for some reason. I never interfere with them. They can stay as long as they like and then go when they want.

@Hannihar No, none of them have ever hurt me. They are small and I can hold them in my hand if they would come to me. I don't think they bite.

I like lizards when I can see what they are doing but not when they hide away in the house and spring out in the dark as its happened to me more than once and scare the life out of me. They are nice to watch though outside.

One really scared me when he jumped on me when I was drifting off to sleep. I think I scared him more than he did me, though. But, I did not sleep well the rest of that night.

@nela13 How big are your lizards? Do they bite? I heard that geckos can grab a dog's lips and hang on. I never saw that happen but a lot of dogs chase them and bark at them. Do your lizards attack dogs? There is a new type here. I think it is called a tegu or something similar. It is very vicious and is an invasive species from somewhere else. Tell us about your lizards.

When I was staying in Florida I would see those lizards around the pool. Like flies if you open the door they can't wait to come inside. We had a large plastic plant they would hide in, lol.

Wow, a plastic plant, they must have thought it was real. I don't know how lizards get in my house. I saw a long black one today. It was on the rug and not the wall. I wonder what he is up too.

Neat! When we lived in Singapore, 30 + years ago, we had geckos. At first it was weird, but I got used to them and I'd love to see one now. My worst memory was when I was at the table reading and one dropped onto my book. Without even thinking, I slammed the book shut and poor gecko took off minus his tail. That was creepy because it (the tail) fell on the floor and kind of wiggled for awhile.

@akalinus It looked like it was still alive, that's what was so creepy about it. I think I saw him after that, without a tail, but like you said, he probably regrew it.

Don't feel too bad. He probably grew his regrew his tail. They do that. I have one here with half a tail. It sounds like that tail was still alive.

very cute. there were several when we first moved in. unfortunately something has happened to them. i think it is because we have had to take such measures to get rid of fleas and ants, etc.

@akalinus obviously it doesn't bother them since you still get them. ours seem gone. but the kids used sprays and such. sad but guess they couldn't think of anything else. years ago i tried the electronic things and they never seemed to work on bugs for me

I have electronic bug and mouse repellers all over my house. Maybe they disturb the geckos. I never thought of that. I should disconnect the one nearest my desk and see what happens. Thanks so much.

Try standing still and talking to them. They respond to the same tone of voice you would use when praising a good dog. Maybe your lizards are too wild, but give it a try.
