Planning an Anniversary Getaway

On June 8, 2018, Al and I will celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary. For our 25th anniversary, we allowed our children to plan a party to celebrate and we renewed our vows. We always go away for a day or two for our anniversary and have since the first one. We have gone to Maine, to Cape Cod, to Providence, to Pennsylvania and lots of other places. It is more about the time alone together than the destination.
These days, we have lots of time together so I wanted it to be a place we would enjoy visiting. last year we went to the Berkshires and visited the Hancock Shaker Village, The Mount and the Norman Rockwell Museum. We stayed in Pittsfield for free as part of a Holiday Inn deal.
This year I decided that I wanted to return to the Berkshires, so I went looking for places to stay. I have always wanted to stay at the Red Lion in Stockbridge and I was able to find a package that included tickets to the Berkshire Botanical Garden. Seemed perfect to me. I checked out the restaurant at the Inn and saw that they also offered two roasts, turkey, and prime rib, also perfect.
I made reservations for dinner on June 7th and also ordered chocolate covered strawberries for our room when we arrive. We will visit the botanical garden on the 8th and then drive home. It is just a one night stay. I am not sure what we will do on the 7th, we may try to find another place to visit.
Our daughter is going to take us out to dinner at Firebox in Hartford on a day after our anniversary. We really don't want a party, we are perfectly happy keeping it a simple family affair. We are not just like everyone else, I was thinking that maybe next year we will have a 51st-anniversary party, that is so much more like us.

I'm sure that you'll long remember this get-away.

It will be nice though of course, in Florida we do have much less commitments and family obligations so we see a lot of each other. I just hope he enjoys the botanical garden.

@BelleStarr That is the physical trip, and then there is the emotional trip down memory lane, just the 2 of you thinking back all of those years. I always find that the amazing and sweetest part of a wedding anniversary.

we go to the races at Saratoga to celebrate our anniversary although its never on the actual date because Football is going on in Sept. when we were married. We are 51 this year too...

@BelleStarr John likes the big races - the ones with big crowds and famous people. So he will be looking over the summer for a reason to go to Saratoga.

Thank you, this has been on my bucket list for a while so I am glad to hear that someone else enjoys it. lol I was 2 when I got married lol Actually I was 18 so yes, a child bride.

@DianneN Yes we were just talking about that today, we have lots of great times, some sad times, some bad times but mostly just life with all its ups and downs. It has flown by that is for sure.

wow. i never thought you were old enough for such an anniversary but i sure want to say a big congratulations 
not many people stay together that long and it says a lot about how close and in tune you are. both of you obviously work as a team and just fit together perfect. it takes 2 i know both wanting to make the other happy. pure perfection you 2.

Thank you so much, we decided early on that we were a team and it was us against the kids lo, (at least when they were young) we were a united front. Today they are all on our team.

@sallypup I can't wait, we are going to visit Naumkeag today, it is a summer "cottage" in the Newport style. I contacted them and asked if they have a media rate and I sent them one of my articles on Hancock Shaker Village and they are giving my husband and I free entrance. I am delighted needless to say.

Where here on Cape did you go?
That was very nice of them to throw you a party back then, but I understand wanting just a little get together with the family these days.

On that anniversary trip, we stayed at a bed and breakfast in Sandwich. We had our anniversary dinner at a lovely restaurant that was in a former church. I sent my daughter and her husband there last fall when they were in the area. They loved it.

Well congrats sounds like a great place to add to your repertoire and let us know how the Red Lion checks out- even though I am not sure where that is. Is it still in Connecticut?

No, the Red Lion is in Stockbridge, Ma which is where Tanglewood is and the Norman Rockwell Museum. it is a quaint, upscale artist sort of town.

Our bedroom had a fireplace too and a porch, it was quite gorgeous and yes we had dinner in the formal dining room!! I had Thanksgiving on a plate!!
