The joy of simple things

Little One has plenty of things to play with – plasticine, Lego, a train set, sticker books – you name it, but although she says she loves all those things, sometimes simple (and free) things are best. In the school holidays she spent one entire day making things out of cardboard boxes, toilet-roll inner tubes and egg boxes, cutting them up, painting and decorating them, and sticking them together with the addition of a few lolly sticks. She was also amazed and as pleased as Punch when I cut out a string of traditional paper dolls for her. A few days ago on a walk through the woods she picked some grass and wanted to make a grass person – no idea where that idea came from. But anyway I managed to tie up a piece of grass into something not dissimilar to a miniature version of the traditional ‘corn dolly’, and then we found a different bit of leaf and made a partner. Again she was chuffed to pieces and played with them afterwards! When I’m in the garden she can spend ages making ‘potions’ by mixing leaves and flowers together in a bucket of water, or playing with stones and fir cones. She spends far more time with those than with the expensive plastic gimmicks. The key thing, though, is that often she likes to do these things while we are doing things nearby. Free components, some imagination, and a bit of company are all that's required! All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2018.

Hi, yes I'm afraid I haven't been here for a while, just too many other things going on. Yes you are right, the simple things are the best.

Don't let the makers of expensive toys read this post! Especially not before Christmas. They'd go bankrupt if grown-ups learnt something from your experience.

It's a shame, not just for the children, but for the parents who feel pressured to buy the latest expensive fad when perhaps they can't really afford it.

She is fun, she's always busy and thinking of new things. I think she could be an engineer.

She will go far with such a vivid imagination and creativity. I wonder if I can amaze my niece with a string of paper dolls tomorrow. Hmmm ...

Surely worth a try? You could try making strings of other things too. Haven't quite worked out a realistic way of doing animals 'holding hands' yet but birds would be OK, you could do line-dancing penguins! Or of course a line of something else like cars, train carriages, trees. Or do big triangles to make bunting. Then of course there is a lot of painting, sticking and drawing to be done decorating them all!

It's is amazing how creative children can be with just the simplest stuff. And most like a bit of company while they do it too. I think it's great that your daughter loves the simple things.

Me too, I just wish I could get more children away from their electronics and outside! We (humans) are storing up all sorts of trouble for our future.

That's the joy of childhood!! Everything belongs to you and you belong to everything. And anything can become a toy out of your imagination. Childhood is a bliss!!

It's just a shame many people don't really appreciate that at the time, isn't it!

These days it is lovely for a child to have a vivid imagination and be happy with simple things. I like to see a corn doll being made. My daughter likes daisy chains. In the autumn my little girl likes to collect golden leaves and makes pictures with them. Plastic toys cost money and it is surprising that you can have free fun like that.

Gardens are fascinating. Oh how I'm reminded of the periods where the class in Elementary School would plant in the Garden. How nice. I too was doing some planting but there are the fruit trees and if there are some on the ground then I'm going to pick up the awesome ones.

Those grass figures are cute and I like the creative side of both figure. Kids like simple things, we should learn from them.

I loved plasticine too, I still remember making a model stone-age village when I was about 7. I loved it. Big One was not so keen but Little One is really enjoying making things with it - she's currently working on a collection of sea creatures!

My kids had always enjoyed playing with the box the toy came in rather than the toy. Just goes to show there are simpler and more creative ways to enjoy yourself whether you are a kid or adult
