Computers play a big roll in today's society. Some people feel very positively about this, and others don't. I think, like most things, with technology - it is all in responsible usage. Not too much. Not too little. A while back I listened to the audiobook "Eniac: The Triumphs and Tragedies of the World's First Computer by Scott McCartney - and while I forget some of the details - it was an interesting look back. Created around the WWII era - Eniac - one of the world's first computers - weighed thousands of pounds and had to be stored in a cooled rooms to prevent a literal meltdown. It took many years to create and was very disruptive to people's lives , work, etc. And it ushered in the technology age we are in now. Here's an interesting link on the subject as well:
A look back at the room-size government computer that began the digital era

I love computers and technology, but I don't like how we've become completely dependent on them. Anytime our servers go down at work, we are literally helpless...our computers don't work, our office phones don't work, our copy machines don't work, etc. We literally cannot do a single thing when we have an outage. In fact, most people end up just taking the day off and going home. We are completely helpless without our computers and networks!

@FayeHazel That's how our enemies are going to bring down this country. They are going to find a way to shut down our entire electrical grid, and then we'll be so lost and helpless without our computers and smartphones that we won't know what to do and won't put up much of a fight when they overtake us! lol

Wow, you do bring a good point. Maybe the dependence has gone a bit too far.

@FayeHazel yeah all depends on the person, and what they need them for.

I like the computer even before the internet came. I used to think of the computer as just another tool for writing like the type writer. I really loved my type writers before.

That's interesting. A little disheartening to find out that its invention was originally geared towards war effort. But I guess that's the one good thing about war - it spurs on advancement in different fields... Anyway, I personally don't think I can live without computers now, and these mobile gadgets. Or maybe I can if the world meets some catastrophe and I have no other choice but I hope not.

True - at least there are inventions to come out of war. I also hope we don't meet a time without these inventions. (Like in the movie "Trancendence" perhaps)

I had heard that Nikola Tesla had this idea way back and it was stolen from him. I am not sure at all about this, its hear say. I do find this interesting, since the computers just about run the world now.

I wouldn't doubt it - didn't Tesla have a lot of inventions that were taken from him? At least as far as I looked into...

My problem with computers is them being forced upon us in conducting every day business.

True... like... one example I can think of is - how a couple of the local branches of chain stores make you download their app in order to use the coupons. How is that fair if you don't have a smart phone? And even if when you do, perhaps you don't want to use up phone memory with a coupon app

Computers are no doubt very useful to all of us. All the Modernization, Globalization, having MNCs etc are possible because of this technology. Now I can't imagine my life without it as I am very much dependent on it and I think most of us are.
