I won't be eating there ever again.

I try not to make more than one discussion a day but I am breaking that self imposed rule today. I went out to eat at a Mexican restaurant today. One that is just up the road but also one that we don't often go to. The last time I was there (the time before this one), we were stared at but otherwise ignored by the waitstaff. It took forever for them to bring us our ticket and the food's quality and quantity didn't meet the price. This time we were attended to more thoroughly but the food quality wasn't what I wanted and the alcohol was.... It wasn't good. First let me say that the chips? Were warm but not hot, and went cold fast. The salsa? watered down and not spicy or flavorful at all. The guacamole? It was alright but not the best, it was probably one of the better things from the entire meal. My raspberry margarita tasted like tomato juice at first and there was barely any alcohol. I ordered it frozen but they didn't add enough ice into it at all (atleast in my opinion). The Enchilada Poblanos? I didn't taste any poblano peppers, the mole sauce wasn't flavorful (until the very end). The salad? Very little guac and no sour cream, the lettuce was also warm though not "cooked". The rice and beans were ok. There were only a few other customers (two other tables maybe) and I overheard one saying they preferred this to another restaurant. Well I definitely didn't and I won't be going back. The food was bland and for the price I paid? I don't expect it. I wrote a review, I normally don't, but I had to express my distaste for the place and hopefully convince others to pass it by.

Ticks me off royally when you go out for a meal and come up short with both service and the quality of the food served. People pay good money to go out to enjoy a good meal. When the experience is a disappointment, it makes it hard to go out and give another place a try.

@ScribbledAdNauseum had to be a reason why you declined it. I would go back to eat there if it were my favorite place.

@ElusiveButterfly The biggest thing? I don't speak Spanish fluently. It's not that I wouldn't mind learning, and I'd certainly learn while working there, but I just don't know. I am not a big fan of being a server either, though I feel as if being a server at a mexican restaurant would be vastly different than at.. say a family diner. It's also right beside where I used to work and I am sure I would eventually see people I did't necessarily work with but would recognize and they'd recognize me.

This place is dated. I don't know when it opened up but it's been there for atleast a decade and a half. I think that they most likely have an owner that doesn't care about anything but the bottom line. The chips weren't fresh at all and the salsa seemed watered down. I will try one place I haven't yet which is closer to me than my favorite place. I didn't go to my favorite place this time because the last time I went I was offered a job and felt a little awkward declining it.

It's good to write reviews, it's not fair to charge customers money for crappy food.

I didn't even try to disptue it at all. I am not confident enough to tell a restaurant what their problems are. I read another person's review, they said they had confronted the manager and he wouldn't listen, kept trying to blame them, and didn't speak very good English. I might have complained had my Spanish been better.

@ScribbledAdNauseum It's easier to complain online and avoid face to face confrontation.

@tzwrites Yes. I think if I was a restaurant owner, I would hate to hear people complain to me. I would much rather read it online. Not that I believe every restaurant reads their online reviews.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That is a bad thing. I think they should give all their best to every customer coming in.

@Shavkat I agree but you never know what goes on behind the scenes. Maybe the manager / owner is awful to the waitstaff. I used to go there all the time years and years ago. It was with a friend who spoke spanish. She told me that she wouldn't want to work there because she was told the owner was very strict.

I definitely will not be going back. I am not so sure that it will last very long. There werent' many people there last night and those who were seemed to be regulars. We were the only ones that don't regularly go.

This sounds really bad, I cannot stand a poor "Margarita", many buy those ready made mix that taste really horrible.

I've never bought the ready made mix myself. The margarita tasted like tomato juice at first and even when I stirred it the raspberry flavor just wasn't really there. I was disappointed because raspberry isn't a flavor I can get at my usual restaurant.

@LadyDuck Oh that sounds really delicious. I need to go strawberry picking. I know of a place about forty five minutes away.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I usually make strawberry margarita at home. I freeze the strawberries when they are in season and I use them still frozen in the mixed to prepare the margarita.

Sounds like there were a lot of issues with the food, its good you wrote the review because not only will potential customers see it but so will the owners and hopefully they will make some changes.

I am not so sure about them making any changes. There have been bad reviews on the place for awhile apparently. When I wrote my own I saw a few bad reviews, one dating back to a year ago. One review mentioned that the owner wouldn't do anything to appease them.

I seriously considered it but I have a fear of people spitting in my food. It's probably somewhat of a paranoid fear, but I'd rather deal with it (the food) and never come back.

@NJChicaa I don't know how much longer they will last. I didn't recognize the waitstaff I did see, and while it has been years since I've been there, the previous waitstaff (and the ones I knew) had been there for years. The menu is so outdated as well. I read a review where a customer had problems with the owner when they went to complain. I'm not sure if they ended up just walking out or what, but they mentioned that "the owner and waitstaff refused to help with the check." I don't know if that meant they refused to comp the meal or what, but I could only assume that they refused to take it off the check.

I do not like that kind of food. . . you paid good money and it should be reflected in the quality of the food. There are not that many places closeby for us to eat, and usually we will go once, possibly twice, and if it is not "outstanding" we will take our dining experiences out of the county. Around here I think they believe that we are so desperate we will settle for anything, but we won't. I had rather cook my own than pay for something sub par.

That kind of thing upsets me too. Any restaurant is only as good as the employees on duty when you are there. If they don't care, you get a lackluster meal, barely passable at best.

@akalinus I am of two minds about the boss being around and talking to everyone. I kind of like to dine with my family or friends in peace but there have been occasions when the boss has come around to talk to us. The last time I was at my favorite mexican restaurant? I got a job offer. I had to refuse and that is one reason why I picked the restaurant I did the other day. I felt embarrassed and wasn't ready to go back to my favorite restaurant yet. Of course there is another restaurant that my family goes to every friday and I love when my favorite waitress comes by for a chat, even if she isn't taking care of us that day. The "boss" of that restaurant isn't my favorite person so I am glad she doesn't come by and talk to us. She is the face of the restaurant as she is the manager and has been sine the beginning. I will say something (about my food) in the restaurants I frequent but I won't do the same for those that I don't frequent.

I agree. The face of the restaurant is really down to the greeters and servers. It might be unfair because just as many mistakes come from the kitchen (if not originate there) but it's up to the waitstaff to be present and competent.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Of course, they can't be responsible for kitchen disasters but they can act like the customer is an important person. I usually never complain about little kitchen mistakes if the servers and greeters are attentive. When we go to our favorite restaurant, the boss is there shaking hands with and talking to the customers. The wait staff is pretty good because the boss sees and hears all.

There is a place I go to close to where I used to work. They are always so friendly and the food is always great. I've had to send something back because they had forgotten something but they were gracious about it. The place last night? I was afraid to do that with.

@RubyHawk Yes you would atleast hope they would listen to them. I watched a whole series of Kitchen Nightmares (Gordon Ramsay show) a few weeks ago. It taught me that a lot of times the owners don't really want to listen to the complaints. Of course, listening to people say how much they hate something that you've done / made would be a hard pill to swallow.

Everyone keeps telling me that I should have complained at the time but I didn't. Not only am I not one for confrontation but I doubt it would have done much good. I also fear people spitting in my food if I complain. I do speak up if it's a restaurant I frequent enough for them to know me.

Hey. When a place is not good it is not good. Service, food quality, whatever it is. If it is not good it is not good. Better people share than don't. That being said, I don't think I caught where this is. What's the restaurant? If I really want to avoid it I have no idea who to avoid. It's not really a review if I don't know who it is.

@porwest Well it is a "La Carreta's". I feel as if it's more outdated than any other I have been to, and the staff just aren't friendly. Atleast not at my local chain. There is another one in this town but I don't remember exactly where and I believe it's a bit too far to go.

I wondered that myelf. The rice wasn't too dry though, not like I would expect if it had been a day old. I assume they have a warming drawer, but the chips weren't very warm at all. I actually wondered if they put the food in the microwave. I always wonder why the plates in Mexican restaurants are always hot.
