Is It Manipulation?

I often wonder if its really encouragement or manipulation, I try to chose my words carefully because if I don`t I get back talk and nothing. No action at all. While he wanted to wallow in self pity today and not go with me, I let him for a while, then I said " lets go buy you that........" Up and ready he was, then I added, I think I will mow a little at the old home place, still the shopping was in mind. I got him what he wanted and then I went to work, but I did the whole yard, About half he said " I thought you was only going to do the front," I said , "well the sun is behind the trees I think I should finish it, give me 15 more minutes." So, was it encouragement or was it manipulation? Photo of the lake, sunset. Its all mine.

Encouragement in my book. After all, I'm rooting for the patient.

I would say a little bit of both. But that is sometimes needed.

I'd say encouragement because when someone starts wallowing in self-pity it can only get worse so it is always best just to change the situation and get out there and get a change of scene too.

Manipulation....positive reinforcement......you do what you gotta do to get by. Sometimes it's in he approach, sometimes it's in the timing. Hurray, you managed to do what you needed to do with minimal fuss and bother!

It could be just getting started. The hard part is always getting started because you do not want to, but once you get going, do not want to not finish and already doing it. Might as well finish it all or you are right back going, Nah do not feel like it.

That is a lovely photo. I think you do well with your patient whatever name you want to give it.

The power of persuasion I would say. To encourage, you cheer someone up, telling them that they did a good thing and could do better. There might be some rewards involved. To manipulate, most often one does something (changing people's mind) to benefit oneself. You didn't benefit yourself here but work like mad. Have you recovered yet?

Ahh, but I did get what I wanted, to go to work, but one job was interfering with the other.
