A Good Visit

Nana and Me

I don't know if you have thought too far into your future. Living for today is imperative, but some day we may need help. This is a picture of my grandmother (I call her Nana), and me, taken this past Tuesday. She was trying to smile, and in another picture she did smile, but my eyes were closed so I used this picture. She would still be living in her own home if her son, my uncle, wasn't a horrible human being. She would never tell him no, but she couldn't take care of him all the time (he lived next door, in a house she owned) so she moved to an assisted living facility. She basically ran away from home. Eventually, because she wasn't helping him anymore he had to move into a facility. Anyway, she lives 3 hours away, so I don't see her often. However, my dad was going to eat lunch with his brothers and sisters, so he dropped me off at her facility and we visited for a few hours. I brought her some things which you appreciated. She's been there a year and a half, and although she doesn't like it, at least get 82 year old self isn't trying to get my opiod addicted uncle off the floor.I I love that woman. It's hard to believe she gave birth to both my awful uncle and my sweetheart of a mother. She really misses my mom, but then I do too. PS. It was so hot!

It is hard to leave your own home and go to assisted living but really, she had no choice.

@AmbiePam She probably did it to help her granddaughters as well as for her son, as a grandma I understand that but I am so sorry for her having to leave the home she loved.

@BelleStarr He didn't want to pay for it himself. She won't talk to her granddaughters, his daughters. They understandably won't speak to him, so she won't speak to them. She's in the wrong on that, and she knows it, but like a lot of parents, she sides with her son. He was/is a terrible father. Thankfully, those girls mothers did a really good job (1 daughter by 1st wife, 2 daughters with 3rd wife), and each woman went on to marry quality men. They are good girls, and before she shunned them she was a wonderful Nana to them. She's still a wonderful Nana in my opinion.

I remember your posts about your poor grandmother and how she was more or less forced out of her house by your uncle. It's good you were able to visit with her.

Know we never know, my husband was really mean to me and my children, and now he's in a nursing home. He never thought, and neither did we that he would end up there.

That’s a lovely picture of the 2 of you. I’m sure your visit made both of your hearts happy. I have to believe that she is much better off living here at least she can seek help for herself if the need ever arose instead of been the one sought.

What a lovely photo of your grandma and yourself. So sad that your grandma had to leave her house in order to get away from her son. Not fair at all.

I know exactly what you are saying. My grandmother was very old when I was young as my dad was the 13th child. Some of my aunts were more like a grandma to me. I had two that were very special to me and I remember going to see one of them in a home. That was always so sad but at least there were others she could talk to and she said she liked being with them. Sometimes if they are home the rest of the family that is taking care of her would ignore her so she felt alone.

I remember your uncle stories, and your grandmother did the best thing to get away from him. At least here she can get any help one needs at the young age of 82. Your photo is beautiful and glad you spent time visiting her.

Lovely share. The photo shows a loving bonding. It is tough going for the elderly generally as the young seem to ignore them - siva

Although it's a long drive go as often as you can. Time just goes so fast and life gets away from us. Most here will remember you writing about your uncle and that situation. Hopefully your grandmother is happy in her new location with people taking care of her instead of her taking care of someone else.

It is so good you spend time with her, a lot of people do not bother with their older family members.

She looks like a sweetheart, so nice that you visit her now and again. I bet she loves when you come to see her, too bad she isn't closer. Spend all the time you can with her and make as many memories as you can.

I think it must be a relief for her not to live with the stress though it certainly is tough leaving your home. She is beautiful and I love that bead necklace. Must have been so happy to see you. Yes, wonder what will happen to us ... Assisted lving facilities are a new thing here
