I said "No More Leader!" But I have to help them

They have lived there for 18 years. For years and years they used me and three years ago I backed off told hem I cannot do for them anymore, all I would do is take them to the bank so I could collect rent and they could get spending money. They hired my sister to mow grass, no one wants to deal with them because they are elderly and born slightly retarded, but I have to collect because they will not pay if I don`t. That is how they are, but they do pay rent without a fuss. A couple days ago I found out that they overdrew at the bank again, and for the most part is has been a utility company collecting that they hooked up to the account, They told Tony they wanted to leave that bank and get a card, he did not understand what they were saying till I told him, its called a direct express card that the government fills with their monthly SS checks. Today I went to their house and told them I would help get this fixed, for one they do not need a bank account, they cannot manage it. I told her first step was to call all the companies and tell them to take you off auto pay because you are closing the account, Next I will drop them off at the SS office Monday to change it, I will write each a letter letting them know at the office what they need and why. It could take hours of waiting so I will do other things I need to get done, I do have an appointment. Last, if they do not need the account open for the next check, I will take them to the bank to close their accounts. I had to tell them this three times, once I told the oldest to sit still and listen this is important, all the while the other one stood by the kitchen door in her panties and a t shirt. That is the wonderful life of a landlady. No! I am not doing this to be nice, because a day with them and you do not want to do nice anymore, if I don`t help next time I may not get rent and they wont have money for food. What would you do?

Hi Andria. I would have gotten mad as I have short temper. But you are civil and polite after all they have done. Besides, someone has to take charge. You did a good job.

I am on a fixed income also and my rent gets paid directly to my landlord on the first of every month. The rent portion of my cheque is sent to my landlord and I get my personal allowance directly deposited into my bank account. Is there any way these tenants can arrange to have the rent portion of their cheque sent to you directly from the SS office? It would make it much easier on all of you if they can.

I think I remember them. You used to haul them to do the shopping and stuff also I believe. Hopefully they listen and glad you wrote the letters for them to help explain things. It is hard to tell what they would end up with on their own.

Yes that is them. People take advantage of them as much as they use people to do for them.

Can you see what I sort of go through with my sister? EXCEPT she is great with her money and bills but she has them on a card. Has to get money orders for her rent, at the grocery store next door.

My sister is the same as yours, just doesn`t drive. I gave her a car and told her to fix it, I am not sure what is wrong with it, something easy I am sure.

Do they have a social worker? I would get them signed up for services. It sounds like they need help.

@andriaperry Go to a local Mental Health Center. You are not turning them in. You are getting them help. That is their job to assist.

@snowy22315 They won`t. The oldest went for about a year, then stopped and no one has came checking on her.

But I am thinking if I turn them into the welfare it would hurt them more than help them.

Helping them get the card is a good idea. That will not let them overdraw and you will be protecting them from themselves. It's a tough life for people in their situation.

I think you are the best landlady, they couldn't find another one who would help them out, this much. Once their banking is straightened out, it will be easy for you to continue, to collect their monthly rent payment. You are doing the right thing, for them and for you, also. On their own, who else would bother to help them this? Noone!

@andriaperry They are considered 'outcasts' because of their mental state. You realize, they aren't doing things on purpose to cheat anyone, they were born with this condition! It's people like these sisters, that some can easily abuse and take advantage of:( God has provided them with a comfortable home and someone who actually care about their well-being. YOU!

@andriaperry True. To an extent. If everyone helped everyone it would work. Too often I find that helpers get completely drained

You are very kind to help them out and as you pointed out, you had no choice anyway if you wanted the rent money. Let hope after this, things would be easier for them and for you to collect the money. (Why can't they arrange direct debit for their rent? It would be easier for you.)

I suppose if that's what you have to do to make sure you get paid. But what a nightmare. Have my last property up for sale and when it's gone, I am no longer a landlord.
