Robbers Better Think Twice About Robbing a Bank!

Would-be bank robbers beware, crime fighting is now going high-tech! Better think twice about robbing a bank now, as new methods are being deployed in the fight against crime. A bank robber in Gainesville was nabbed this past week without incident when police quickly and silently followed the trail of the criminal after he robbed a local bank. How'd they do it? Bank tellers are now trained to place GPS tracking devices in the money sack with the loot when they are robbed. The teller then activates the GPS device and sits back and lets the police do the rest from there! The police monitor the tracking device and figure out where the criminal is going, and then they can plot their plan of attack to capture the robber with the least amount of collateral damage. In this particular case, police were able to corner the thief on some back country roads, and due to the surprise response from the police, the bank robber was not prepared and put up little fight. And thankfully this particular case ended peacefully, as the bank robber had his wife and two children in the car with him. It turns out he was also wanted for a bank robbery in another Florida city as well. Score one for the good guys!

Ahhh, well, the gigs up, now robbers everywhere will look for gps devices before running off ..... this of course could take a while and that would mean quick capture.

As long as they ain't smart then all's welllllll @moffittjc but a smart robber might actually find the gps and toss it. OR ...... if I were dumb enough to try ...... simply take only part of the goods and run off leaving the bag in some kinda land fill.

@rebelann I was thinking something similar. Take out as much cash as you can carry (and do it quickly before the dye pack explodes), and then throw the rest of the money sack in the back of some poor unsuspecting saps truck and then head in the opposite direction that he's traveling! The police will then follow the GPS tracking and nail the poor guy in the truck. Can you imagine how that driver would have to explain that one when he gets pulled over and arrested?

Well, those exploding dye packs have been around for decades, but those stupid robbers don't ever think to look in the bag and pull out the dye pack before it explodes, so I think it's safe to say they won't take the time to look for the GPS device either.

Do people still rob banks? It's difficult to enter a bank already, then banks aren't allowed to keep a lot of cash inside, and they can't withdraw as much as they want. At least that's how it works here. I like that GPS idea though. Next step is to get rid of the money sack.

It seems like banks get robbed here all the time. Maybe these stupid criminals think they can still get thousands of dollars in one bank robbery, versus less than a hundred by robbing a store. I think one of the reasons they still use a money sack is because when they fill it full of money for the robber, they also stick in an exploding dye pack, so that after the robber runs out of the bank the dye pack explodes and covers all the money in dye. Money can't be used once it is stained with dye, as that is a major indicator that it has been stolen!

Wow! Robbing a bank with his children and wife. I wonder if they knew what he has done or just told them, I'm going to the bank to withdraw some money. It is good to come across bank tellers who are calm in that situation and put the GPS in. :)

@moffittjc Ohh, really? Only a few banks here have bullet proof glasses. Actually 2 banks I know of and they're not banks I bank at either. Are they all bullet proof glass there?

I think that since the tellers sit behind bullet-proof glass, that they should refuse to honor any of the bankrollers requests! lol

I think that robbers in Italy were smarter, they immediately got rid of the bags, transferring the money in "anonymous" bags and letting the police follow the "empty" bags with the GPS.

If I ever robbed a bank, not only would I transfer the money to a different bag, I would also either pass it on to an accomplice, or stash it somewhere hidden to keep the evidence out of sight for a while until things calm down.

@moffittjc It's hard sometimes to think 'outside the box' isn't it? They tag some criminals here with GPSs too - those on home release or curfews or whatever.

Well, every bank robber knows they put exploding dye packs in the money bags, yet you don't see the criminals yelling at the bank tellers to take those out! I think in the heat of the moment, the bank robbers' adrenalin is so high that they forget about all that!

@moffittjc You know, it's weird, but I just realized when you said that my bank doesn't have anything between the teller and the customer. I don't remember seeing that before. And now I ask myself why that is.

@AmbiePam Banks are insured, so if they get robbed, they will file an insurance claim to recover the value of the money lost. So tellers are trained to not resist or put up any kind of fight, and just give the robbers what they want. Since this is the case, there rarely is any violence or shooting or kidnapping in a bank robbery. As a result, I'm sure many banks nowadays have chosen to forego the bullet-proof glass.

@moffittjc - I am beginning to think that criminals never watch the crime shows on TV. If they did, they would know that there are cameras everywhere ... along the streets, inside businesses, overlooking parking lots, outside the homes of people along their getaway route, etc. In addition, they would know that their cars and phones can be tracked, they will probably leave behind both their fingerprints and their DNA, and by-standers will camera phones will almost certainly take a photo of them. I don't know why criminals even bother anymore! They should just give up immediately!

I agree! That's why they are so stupid. I can't believe that in this day and age they think they can get away with crime. It's too easy to track them. Technology is too advanced now to think that it won't play a part in the capture of crooks.

@moffittjc - When I worked with Special Ed kids at a local high school, many of them had minor criminal records for shoplifting and things like that, because they did not have good self-control. I used to point out to them all the time that there are cameras everywhere. They should know. They were getting caught constantly! It amazes me how easy it is to catch criminals these days, but they still keep trying.

Either he was totally stupid and brought them along thinking they wouldn't be in harm's way, or he was totally stupid and involved them in the plot. Either way, he was totally stupid and will be paying for it for a long time. He will have lots of time sitting in a prison cell to think about how stupid he was.

@RubyHawk Many criminals actually don't care if they get caught. For many of them, their life on the outside is so bad that prison is a welcome alternative. They get a warm bed, a roof over their head, 3 meals a day, cable TV, plenty of exercise, and free medical and dental care. To many, being on the inside is a much better life for them than being on the outside.

@moffittjc I'm always surprised at how thieves think they will never be caught and they almost always are. You would think they would know they are going to end up in prison. It takes a stupid person to risk spending years in prison.Money isn't worth it.

This is great except it's think future robbers would now know to check the bag for the device before going very far. It does remind me of something I saw on TV somewhere recently that airports here are starting to use face recognition software work id's. Supposedly they can processes 400 people in a shorter amount of time. And or course this has been done already some place in Europe.

It is possible that crooks can check the bag for the GPS device. But keep in mind that banks have been putting those exploding dye packs in bags for decades, and robbers still don't think to check for them when they rob banks and run off. So I'm not too worried about the robbers taking the GPS devices out, since they are already too stupid to take out the exploding dye packs.
