It is only natural...is it?

Ok...so it is piddling. For some reason ..Indian men don't feel ashamed doing it. My father is 83 and diabetic. There are fewer urinals around, and there are times when he needs it every 15 minutes ..especially in winters. He still drives around to urinals or opts to go to some eatery use their restroom. But what is the excuse men who may be in 20's and 30's have to be doing it at every nook and corner? It is not as if they are homeless. It is not as if they are uneducated. It is not as if they are from poor background, so don't know how to use toilets. It is also not as if they don't know where urinals are. It is not as if it is only natural because women control, and so do children and elderly. They are just shameless. Driving down some place yesterday, I saw two guys doing that in posh locality. I turned my face...and thought I can never invite many of my friends out here. Is there a way to repair the situation without hefty penalties? I think 5000 fine for everybody who does it in open, and 1000 reward for everybody who gets hold of such a person is a good idea.

A lot of men here do that as if the streets are an extension of their toilet rooms. Hahaha

I thought it was only Indians..now I learn even Pakistanis and men from Philippines do it. Isn't it strange that little boys and girls feel ashamed to be doing it, but not grown up men.

No men do something like this here, they would be severely fined and if they are caught several times, they even risk jail.

Fine is what we need..urgently and meaningful fine. But even forcing vehicle owners to buy mandatory pass to urinals will increase the usage of urinals I think. In a way Modi did feel about it. But nobody is changing. They want foreign to look beautiful, and would do nothing to make the country beautiful.

@LadyDuck Actually building and upkeep does cost. Most of the people who use are drivers of lorries that bring in tiles, food stuff, etc. They travel long distance, unload the material, and then do what they do. There is a urinal right in front, but it costs. Who will cross the road for that...but if they are paid monies...they would. I mean, the owner of the vehicle would be charged, every month. The users would be given for every time they swiped it subject to the maximum.

@vandana7 Forcing people to buy passes for urinals sound weird. Here public toilets are free of charges, so this would bring nowhere.

I too have such concern like you, how those people do not have any restrictions even in big cities like Delhi. It is a shame actually. They think they can do any anything in public places. It is high time to change their thoughts. No penalties will work for them.

I was just concerned about our little girl (neighbor's daughter). Today was the first day she traveled in the morning in her bus...and was back around 12 noon. Definitely she might witness it sometime. What are we to say to her.

Yes, penalties would work, if applied correctly, @Sreekala! It would need to be done the way it used to be done here. When someone is caught relieving themselves where they shouldn't, they are given a ticket. The first time they are caught, the fine is $50 and the person's name and crime are published in the paper. The second time the fine is doubled and their name published in the paper. The fines keep increasing until the person stops or can't afford to pay the fine. When they can't afford to pay the fine, they go to jail for an appropriate amount of time. Here in the US when the person couldn't pay the fine the court sold the fine to someone who made the person work (usually in a job that nobody wanted to do) for so many days to repay the cost the person paid... Back when this was done here, the person who bought the fine from the court could whip the person they paid the fine for if they didn't work or didn't work fast enough. *shrug* Some things about the past were much better (though less enlightened) than they are today, in my opinion.

@vandana7 You tell her, don't look. Those are poor, uneducated men. It is only the poor and ignorant who would do such things. If she is like most little girls here, that statement will go around the schools and out into the public and hopefully, shame those doing it into acting like adults. (You never know what will work and what won't. *shrug*)

I understand it still happens and many corporate places here in America will not let you even use their facilities unless you patronize their establishment, but never understood why men do it so openly. I at least tried to hide behind a bush or something. I think there probably should be fine or something if you are going to be so openly disrespectful. I also think they should make to where establishments allow you to use their restrooms without having to buy something. It is a basic human need to have to relieve yourself.

I think buying things should not be made mandatory. Instead, they should be able to collect some nominal fee for urinal usage, after all, they do have to get them cleaned. So 10 -20 cents would be reasonable I think.

@crossbones27 They get the money when the product is sold. If everyday all the products are sold, then enough money is raised that way. If instead that was reduced from the price, and not everybody was charged but only those who used it were charged, then it may be a win win for everybody. As I see it, why should I pay 10 cents more for service I did not use. That is making them richer. And if somebody only uses the urinals and does not buy anything, they get nothing but have to clean up. There is injustice both ways.

@vandana7 No, because corporate world already includes than in their prices and they clean them once a day anyway. No sense to be charged twice, but corporate America will love you.

Is that your personal opinion only or do other women feel the same? If so, why not start a movement? Are there female politicians in your area who would support it? I'm sure fines would help.

@MALUSE The trains arriving in the mornings..around 6 am to 8 am...do not offer beautiful sunrise. The railway lines have poor people sitting there and openly doing that. To be fair, water is a big issue. They presume that since nobody knows us, it is ok.

@vandana7 Uhm... water is an issue? Can't they find a magazine or some handy leaves? Just remember, if you decide to do this, don't use leaves that come in clusters of five and never use the leaves of a climbing vine! Unless, of course, you like scratching like mad and itching like crazy!

@vandana7 In the town where I live a local newspaper has a page with letters to the editor. They are always read and discussed by the readers. If you have something like that, you could write a letter yourself and ask other women to do the same. A local TV station could also take up the issue. The national Tourist Board should be interested in it, too. It's certainly a reason not to visit India. If defacating locals were mentioned in tourist brochures, many foreigners would rather stay at home!

*grinning at you* Luckily, I was never caught... Of course, we are talking about when I was in my teens and twenties, too. Police are a bit more pervasive than they were way back then.

Surely they are shame less and I wonder if someone can stop. Honestly at our area there is public service very nearby. Still many of them don't even think about walking to that place and do it any corner. I have stopped some of them by telling, but they are just count less.

I peed a few times in alleys when I was kinda drunk, and young. But yes, that's quite rude. Men are lucky, they could even use a water bottle and do that in their car, or hide somewhere, but not pollute with their own waste. Fines seem okay, but they ought to be followed and respected, that's the difficult part, I think.

That is pretty honest...men actually have physiological advantage too. LOL. We have to squat...imagine squatting in alleys where others have peed and done whatever they did. LOL. As a child I remember being told to go behind some car at the beach because the teacher did not know where the restrooms are. Much later..medicines that I was taking prompted me to ask the bus driver to stop somewhere in jungle, and I did go there. Many other women too went. But these were situations where you simply do not have any ..any restrooms across 300 kms.

@vandana7 Uhm... men have no overt advantage, vanny. Women can stand and pee, just like men do. There are two ways a woman can do this. Both take a bit of practice. (Men have to practice before they get it right, too. Some men still need more practice!) The first way a woman can do this is to pull up sharply at the top of her cleft. (As each woman's parts are different, this is where the practice comes in.) As the woman releases her stream, she will need to tug right, left or hold still to get the flow where she wants it. The second way is to use a specially made device that channels the flow where the woman wants it to go. (Uhm... I've ... uhh... seen a woman hit a fly as neatly as any man can, so I know it can be done either way.) The devices are sold on Amazon. Look here:

Oh, wow! Those young men need to be fined for doing that, vanny... I could see someone like your dad needing to go so badly that he had to stop somewhere that didn't have a restroom to use, but those young men are just lazy! (Or possibly, if they knew the people who live in the house, showing disrespect to them.)

Good thinking Vanny. It is disgusting to see people peeing everywhere. You know one of my over riding memories of India was the overwhelming smell of pee everywhere!

This is common world over. India is far better when compared to other countries. I am not talking about the developed ones. Even in India also the situation improved a lot. Sometimes, it becomes pathetic and compulsory when the maintenance is poor and the surrounding is loaded with mud and water. This generally happens during the rainy season.

I think maintenance can be improved. Usually it is the truck drivers and auto drivers who do that. You are from Hyderabad, so you would know the road I am talking about. It is the corner where the road to Krishna Nagar turns up towards Jubilee Hills. Pretty posh locality but corner has some demolished structures and that has become a corner to be used like that! Even hawkers use that. Hawkers should be given licenses so that license monies can be used to provide them decent urinals. Most of these people are not going to pay from their pockets. But if license is made mandatory they would have no choice. As to auto drivers and truck drivers, like bus pass, there should be mandatory urinal pass that can be swiped at urinals, or even some of the eateries or hospitals or petrol bunks.

Penalty is the only way to stop such irritating behaviour. Where government has opened many pay and use toilets, still there are guys who pee on road's corner.

Hawker community. They have nowhere to go, and going to those pay and use ones is not only expensive but also they are very far from where these people sit. Ideal thing is ban hawkers. Similarly auto drivers should be made to pay mandatory fees for using toilets whether they use it or not. So also truck drivers and helpers. Once they have paid for it, we could have better facilities and since they would think it is free, they would use it.
