Travelling with Jennifer Dombrowski in Tasmania

This morning while chatting with Jennifer Dombrowski (@Marty1) I told her I’d take her with me on our travels today. Of course she wasn't really able to come as she lives in the USA but I did think about her as we went about our day so I'm writing about it as though Jennifer was with us. We had a marvellous time so I hope Jennifer enjoys reading about it as much as Vince and I did actually being there. We travelled to Cataract Gorge near Launceston, Tasmania. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area and is found at the lower section of the South Esk River. We rode on the chairlift which has the longest single-span (308 metres/1,010 feet) in the world. The chairlift was built in 1972 and has a total length of 457 m (1,499 ft). We walked back along the Alexandra Suspension Bridge and got some good photos looking back up the river and also down to the lawned areas near the café and swimming pools. When we alighted from the chairlift there were three little wallabies waiting to greet us. They seemed totally unafraid but we didn’t try to pet them. Later we saw eight or ten on the side of the road and again they didn’t seem afraid and were happy to pose for us. The photos we took at Cataract Gorge are the best ones so I’ll include them in a later discussion. The photo is taken from the chairlift as we sailed out across the open space. You can see how small the people look below. Did you enjoy your day, Jennifer?

I love the chairlifts, my husband refuses to use them pretending they are not safe, what a shame! I am glad you are enjoying your travel.

@JudyEv My husband does not trust all things hanging on a cable. There are several accidents every year and people must be rescued with helicopters. This is what he fears.

Thanks. I didn't think Vince would go on on the chairlift but he did. He said it was okay as long as he didn't look straight down.

How neat, glad you enjoyed yourself. I always wanted to go to Tasmania, but was a more of a working holiday and had to go where Marines said we could go. Now I at least know what I missed out on.

@JudyEv Did you see any devils in the Tasmania form? I really wanted to see those guys, but heard they are really mean for how small they are.

It is a very pretty but rugged island. It is quite small but there is a lot to see and do.

@crossbones27 I've seen them in the Perth Zoo and they are very aggressive with each other. We've seen signs on the road warning motorists about them - as in not to run over them. They would flee from humans and very timid really. Here is the one that resides in Perth.

@judyev I don't do chairlifts and cable cars any more - it takes a few days for everything to relax inside me after all the involuntary clenching my body does while on them. I went up Table Mountain in the fog in 1970 by cable car and over Niagara on a cable car that stopped half way over and just dangled there in the wind for a while.

That would be a bit scary. I don't see how this can have the 'longest chairlift span'. Surely Niagara would have to be longer to get across all that water. At least you can always say you've done them. You don't to mention the 'involuntary clenching'.

I'm not a one for such chair lifts. I suffer from vertigo. I'm not able to enjoy the sight around me when I'm sitting on such a thing (I've done it. I know what I'm talking about). :-(

I can understand this. I know many people just can't cope with things like chairlifts. I didn't think Vince would go but he was happy too. He avoided looking down.

@JudyEv The ones in your photo are the worst. But closed cabins aren't much better

@MALUSE We rode on one like this in Austria and it rocked and swayed a bit. What I don't like about chairlifts is having to get on and off them while they are moving. But the man slowed the chair down a bit and it wasn't difficult at all to get on and off.

Sorry Louise I didn't really meet Jennifer. I just said I'd take her with me but in a figurative sense - just pretending.

No, sorry. It was just a joke in a way. A pretend thing but hopefully she'll enjoy reading about it. She said she wished she could come with us so I said I'd take her.

I am happy to know you didn't come to the US to get Jennifer... I would have been upset that you hadn't stopped by and said hello! (Hmmm... the first part of this doesn't sound right... I hope you know what I was trying to say there! grinning at you) That is a very nice photo, Judy. I wouldn't have ridden up the lift with you. Vince is either very brave or... uhm... nothing I say here will sound good, so I think I will keep it to myself.

@JudyEv That is cool that you want Jennifer with you and if she could not be in person so she was in mind, I hope she enjoys reading this too how you were thinking of her. I bet that would put a smile on her face.

We are trying to organise a small plane flight over Wineglass Bay but I'll let Vin go on his own. It's quite expensive and I'm not fussed about going - although after all that money I'd certainly keep my eyes open!!! What a waste!

I can't find any details but I think it would have been about 75 metres. We crossed the gully on the chairlift then walked to the bridge, crossed it and walked back to the cafe area. We were there about an hour.
