Picnic At Hanging Rock (A book and An Amazon Original)

I use amazon video to watch television though I also have a netflix account. I've been using amazon a lot more lately simply because I have a firestick and amazon content is the first thing that pops up for me. With amazon you see several advertisements of shows on their network throughout the show you are currently watching. Picnic At Hanging Rock has been one of the advertisements I've seen over the past couple of weeks. Today I finally decided to check it out and I am very glad I did. I intend to eventually read the book as well. I am quite horrible at describing things but I will do my best to give a brief synopsis for those who might want to watch the mini series or read the book. The story is based around events in the years surrounding 1900. The characters are all young women who attend a finishing school headed up by a very stern widower. Hanging Rock is a rock formation that is surrounded by valleys and forest. It also seems to be a popular spot because of it's history. The headmistress of the school grants her pupils a visit to The Hanging Rock on Valentine's Day of 1900. She does not go herself but leaves them in the care of two of their teachers as well as a few gentleman. Three of the girls ask to go off on their own and one of the teachers grants them their request with the stipulation that they will only be gone an hour. They go missing and you learn things about them as well as the people surrounding them as they are being searched for. The story ends with you having several different opinions on what may have happened to them but without knowing for sure. Of course it also ends with one of the main characters demise and you could assume that that character had something to do with it but I am not so certain myself. Have you seen this or read the book? If so, what did you think to it.

It will only be on amazon. It irks me somewhat these "Netflix", "Hulu", "Youtube" originals. I had several shows on hulu that I wanted to keep watching but the service kept buffering and buffering for me and I had to get rid of it. The support for hulu is horrendous as well. Anyway, I hope you can find it and will like it. It is the one that is an Amazon Original. The movie from the 1970's comes up as well but I am referring to the newest one here.

@DianneN I don't know if it was because I had upgraded a couple of times or what. You know how things go though, what doesn't work for me might work for you.

@JESSY3236 I know amazon has it but this site has it as well :
Read "Picnic at Hanging Rock" by Joan Lindsay with Rakuten Kobo. ***Now a six-part TV series starring Natalie Dormer, from Amazon Prime* A 50th-anniversary edition of the landmark novel...

@RubyHawk Who is it by? I was trying to look it up and all I could find was reference to "The Wife Between Us." I'll be writing more discussions on books I have and have not read. I think it's great we have so many readers here and we can encourage each other to read more.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I like books that lead you a merry chase. I just finished A Wife Between Them. It had me guessing all the way through the book.

That is a remake of the original movie, I think I have seen it. I never read the book though. It seems like it would be good.

Yes I Was informed there was an original made in the '70's. The storyline is a good one and I bet the book would dive a bit deeper. The amazon version had me forever questioning things.

Yeah, I've been seeing 'that banner above my "Continue Watching"-list on Amazon Prime' as well. Thanks for the preview, but I don't think I'm gonna watch it unless it's something mysterious like witches or aliens or time-travel ... I currently have a few DOCTOR WHO seasons and that season of BBC's HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY on my list.

I am not much for Doctor Who but I do love Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. If you haven't checked out "Lore" than you might give it a try. It talks about what people were superstitious and afraid of in the past. There is one episode dedicated to Lobotomy.

@rakski I hope you enjoy the book. If you use youtube you might search for the title there. It won't be the same series I watched but I was told there is a series from the 70's that is based on the book as well.

I read the book when I was quite young, maybe eleven or twelve. I can still remember the cover and vaguely remember the story. I also remember that I did really enjoy it. I've seen the original film too, but again, a long time ago. If I remember I'll look the Amazon Original version up tonight and watch it in bed!

The amazon original is 6 episodes long. I will have to watch the older version at some point as well. You will be able to find the older version on amazon too.

I wasn't aware there was an original film version. I will have to look into that. I'm weird about watching another version of something I've already watched though. For instance, I love "And Then There Were None" circa 1940's but didn't like the later British Adaptation from the '00's. Of course they ended it differently and that may be part of it.

@Marty1 Yes it is based off of the Agatha Christie Novel. I believe the British adaptation I found on amazon prime but it has been several years so I am not sure. You can go to youtube and type in "And Then There Were None Full Movie" and the older version should pop up. It's been a few years since I've watched it, but that is how I watched it before.

Is it based on a true story? Either way, it sounds really good. I might have to check it out. I wonder if I should read the book first or second. The books are usually better than the movies. I am glad that you enjoyed it.

@ScribbledAdNauseum There have been very few movies that I have seen that I liked after reading the book. This is why I won't see Fifty Shades. I read all the books which I don't like romance books but these ones were good. But I have a different vision of the characters than the ones that were in the movie.
