Favourite way to travel

I have a car and it is convenient sometimes but I must admit I love travelling by train or even bus if it's not too long a journey. There are times when it's just nice to sit and watch the world go by and not have to concentrate on driving or worry about parking. The only thing is public transport is expensive here so I don't do it too often unless it's a short journey. Do you like to drive yourself places or do you prefer to take the train or bus. What is your favourite way to travel?

I prefer a car, as a passenger. The train was pleasant in the past, no more in our days. I am scared by the bus, there are so many accidents.

We rarely have accidents with buses or trains here. I am more worried about crashing in a car.

@LadyDuck That sounds terrible. I don't think I would want to travel on them. Here we rarely have accidents and if we do they are usually minor. We have had a few coaches which have accidents on school trips though which makes me nervous every time my granddaughter has to travel on one.

@sprite1950 Local buses that travel short distance are very safe, but the big travel buses are not at all. I read about terrible accidents inside the tunnels and this is something that scares me. Trains here in Switzerland are safe and clean, I would not get a train going to Italy.

@sprite1950 Since I got my scooter I rarely take a bus or the train these days. I enjoy using my scooter.

@Hannihar It's nice to be able to get about even if it's not far. I think a scooter might suit me.

@sprite1950 I just go to places I can in Jerusalem. There are places I cannot travel too because too far and would use up my battery because have to get back too. I cannot go on highways so mostly around town and places I can get to. I have a plastic that is put on it in winter. We get rain in the winter so need the plastic.

I love travelling on trains for longer journeys. I'd love to do the Orient Express but Mrs WorDazza suffers from motion sickness so long train journeys and cruises are very much off the agenda

My granddaughter suffers from terrible motion sickness on coaches and in cars but is fine on a train. I don't know many people who get sick on trains. I come from a long line of travel pukers but thankfully I grew out of it around the age of 12/13.

@WorDazza It is a horrible feeling. If I have to do a long journey I still feel yucky but I wouldn't actually be sick now. I found some good pills for my granddaughter. They are called Stugeron15 and you can buy them over the counter for around £3. She has managed long journeys with them and they are prescribed by doctors for inner ear problems which is probably why they are so good. Nothing else ever worked.

@sprite1950 Fortunately it's something that's never bothered me. My wife is fine in cars unless we're on a particularly winding road. Unfortunately for her, to get to her sister's house we have to cross over the Pennines. We can either go over Woodhead Pass (very winding) which is about a 35 mile trip each way or go over the M62 and down the M1 which is about an 80 mile trip each way. I just go over Woodhead and put up with her moaning!!

Buses are often very bumpy rides. I often feel a bit yucky on a long bus journey.

@nela13 When I was little the smell of petrol made me sick. Lots of people like the smell though.

@sprite1950 I think it is the smell inside the buses that make me sick.

@porwest I'm not a particularly confident driver so if it's a long journey I prefer to take the train,

@sprite1950 I have to admit I have been on the metro, but never on an actual train. I have always said I'd like to take a train ride at least once.

I like to travel by car the best. When I do travel, I am usually with my sister and she usually drives. I have driven across the country by myself and I didn't mind that. Of course, I was much younger. I have taken a bus across country too and will never do that again. It was packed the whole way so you couldn't really move too much. If it is a short trip then that is different. I have taken a train on a 4 hour trip and that was fine. I liked being able to look at the scenery.

Isn't it strange how we are braver when we are young. I think it's because we don't have children and other responsibilities to think about. Once you have kids you have to keep yourself safe for them.

@sprite1950 Yes that is true. You have less time and money as well. I would love to travel around the country and just see a bunch of interesting sites.

I have a car however I am not the world's most confident driver because I only passed my practical driving test in 2010. I went on a train today with my disabled son because he had a hospital appointment. The area the hospital in has a shortage of parking spaces. I like to walk 20 minutes to the train station because it costs money to park at the train station. I use a Family and Friends Railcard when I travel with one or both of my children to get cheaper train tickets. However this only works for off peak train journeys. I find the bus takes a lot longer than the train and it isn't as pleasant. For a short journey without my children I like to cycle on my bike.

I used to live in Canterbury and I was a student in North Wales when I did my degree. I had a young person's Railcard. When I came back home after being a student I got a Network Rail Card for London and the South East. I often travel by train so I like to have a Friends and Family Railcard. Yesterday I used it to take me and my disabled son to Bristol for some appointments. In the school holidays I would be taking my daughter as well. Well done for passing your driving test. It is hard to become a confident driver isn't it.

@maximax8 We have a rail station here so it would be easy to travel to places like Bath and Swindon, They have good shopping centres and are very close to me. Yes I don't think I will ever be a confident driver now.

I passed my test when I was 54 and I'm not very confident either. I thought about getting a Family and Friends railcard but I don't know if we would use it enough to justify the expense. It would be handy for days out to the coast

It's much cheaper to take a bus here than to drive. Most of the time when I go to work, I choose to take a bus. If it's a trip,I will choose a bus or a train.

@sprite1950 The picture is from a photoshoot to promote an arts festival where I gave some talks and hosted some quizzes in 2005. The remaining hair is greyer now and I have a goatee beard. I believe she still looks the same, though.
