Microwave popcorn

I’ve sometimes seen packets of microwave popcorn in the shops and I thought it must be specially treated somehow. It is certainly a lot more expensive than the regular un-popped stuff, so I stuck to the traditional method of popping regular corn in a big pan with a little bit of oil. But now that my partner is on one of his ‘diet and fitness’ regimes, I investigated the microwave method again, and I found that there is no need for any special corn. All you have to do is put a handful of the regular stuff in a large paper bag, fold the top over loosely, and microwave for 4 or 5 minutes. Just listen to the popping so you can stop when it dies down otherwise you get a slightly burnt flavour. It’s so easy! Also healthy as there’s no need to add any oil at all, and super cheap as a 500 g (just over a pound) packet of corn only costs a few pence and makes loads! It makes a great and really quick snack. I’m still puzzled about the ‘microwave popcorn’ though – what is it that they charge extra for? Has anyone ever tried it? All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2018.

I also use the paper bag method and it works, without the need to buy expensive "special" popcorn the the grocery stores.

@Fleura I remember we used to put normal corn in the traditional oven when we were kids. We did not use a bag and we made a mess.

@LadyDuck I remember making popcorn in a pan when I was a student. We would wait for something to happen, and nothing did - then as soon as I lifted the lid to peep, all the corn would immediately pop and jump out! Have you ever tried cooking chestnuts in a microwave? That also works, but you have to be careful because they can explode!

I can't believe no-one told me about this years ago - why doesn't everyone do it?

It is, I don't know why anyone would pay a premium for 'special' stuff covered in poisonous chemicals!

We have tried it. You're probably paying extra for the packaging. Or for nothing. *smile*

I must be one of the few people around who don't like popcorn so I've never tried this but I know lots of people seem to microwave it without any trouble.

I was obviously slow to find out about this! I had seen packs of 'microwave popcorn' for sale and so I concluded that the popcorn must have to be specially treated somehow in order for it to work!

I read that microwave popcorn are very bad to our health.
What can you tell me about the safety of microwave popcorn? I eat a lot of it but recently heard that it could be dangerous.
