Microwave popcorn

I’ve sometimes seen packets of microwave popcorn in the shops and I thought it must be specially treated somehow. It is certainly a lot more expensive than the regular un-popped stuff, so I stuck to the traditional method of popping regular corn in a big pan with a little bit of oil.
But now that my partner is on one of his ‘diet and fitness’ regimes, I investigated the microwave method again, and I found that there is no need for any special corn. All you have to do is put a handful of the regular stuff in a large paper bag, fold the top over loosely, and microwave for 4 or 5 minutes. Just listen to the popping so you can stop when it dies down otherwise you get a slightly burnt flavour.
It’s so easy! Also healthy as there’s no need to add any oil at all, and super cheap as a 500 g (just over a pound) packet of corn only costs a few pence and makes loads! It makes a great and really quick snack.
I’m still puzzled about the ‘microwave popcorn’ though – what is it that they charge extra for? Has anyone ever tried it?

@LadyDuck I remember making popcorn in a pan when I was a student. We would wait for something to happen, and nothing did - then as soon as I lifted the lid to peep, all the corn would immediately pop and jump out!
Have you ever tried cooking chestnuts in a microwave? That also works, but you have to be careful because they can explode!

Your microwave popcorn is amazing. I used to make microwave popcorn, and it was really great.

We have tried it. You're probably paying extra for the packaging. Or for nothing. *smile*
