I Don't Want Doodles to be Put to Sleep!!!!

I've been crying for two entire days. Our son called the cat psychologist. He has an appointment with her this coming Monday. But he also called the veterinary hospital to enquirer about having Doodles, the love of my life, put to sleep. Doodles has an enlarged heart and is on multiple medications twice a day. He has a heart murmur which has gotten worse over the years. He recently developed arthritis. He also has a bad knee from a former accident that goes out on him. None of that is a problem. The problem is that he started spraying urine. He sprayed in a corner of my family room. He actually peed in another corner. He sprayed in two bedrooms and once in our living room. He has three clean kitty boxes. Our son bought pheromones to calm him. I bought special cleaners online. We are at our wits end. My son doesn't want Doodles in his new home. He's too ill to fly to Florida for the winter with us. We are all hoping the cat psychologist can help. She's been so helpful in the past. I am so upset over this. It's our son's decision. Afterall, Doodles is really his cat. I did get a big hug and kiss from our son. He told me not to worry. We will try to work this out. I have spoken to Doodles about this situation. Today he listened.

Thanks, Felix. We shall see what the cat psychologist suggests. She's been awesome in the past. No matter what, I won't allow Doodles to be put down unless he is suffering. I'll take my chances flying him to Florida if need be.

Your son should take Doodles with him. Not fair. Apparently he has no control over his bladder. Poor Doodles. Why don't you confine him and take him out as you always do. Unless he stops eating and does not move you should wait to take that decision

I'm the one who doesn't want Doddles to spray in my son's new home. We've closed off most of the rooms now and will wait for the cat psychologist to call on Monday. My son just spent an hour filling out a questionnaire from her, and she's been so helpful in the past. The vet said it's behavioral and examined him 6 weeks ago. I will take my chances with Doodles by flying him to Florida if his heart is a bit better. My son is afraid that Doodles will have a heart attack on the plane. We shall see. Never a dull minute here.

Poor boy, I think Doodles is stressed, may be part is caused by the medications he has to take every day. I hope the psy can help him.

He is definitely stressed. He started doing this before he received his meds. The vet said it may be related to the mating season and what he smells in the yard. I have had many big talks with him and so far, so good for two straight days. If his heart is strong enough, we will take him to Florida with us if he's still spraying. Thanks, Anna.

Hi Dianne. I am sorry this is happening to Doodles. My heart goes to you all. There might be a reason why he is spraying urine everywhere. The cat psychologist may shed some light on it.

I most certainly couldn't have agreed to this. In wilderness they have their family they have their friends, they have their social circle. Among humans they only have us to love, and they spare none of it. After showering affections for so many years, put them to sleep? Would I do that to an elderly person in my family? Nope. So no for this cat also. I do understand you. May god help you make the right choice. It still would be yours.

@DianneN I sure am grateful to you for that. :) The love these furry beings are capable of ...unbelievable. They don't want your monies, they don't crib about you, even if you are the lousiest cook, they don't play politics, and are always there to listen to your pain as if they understand you. And make you exercise, which you might forget to do, and in some cases, even save your life. They deserve to know that their love is reciprocated in full measure.

Maybe it's your daughter in Law, cats sometimes become irrational when there is a major change to the human aspect. Would your son consider constructing a catio so that Doodles can have some a place to do as he wants?
Looking to build a catio yourself? Find various blueprints here and give your cat the joy of spending time outside in a safe environment.

LOL! I hope it's not her! However, he has known her for over 4 1/2 years and they seem to love each other. They sing together. Ha ha! My husband refuses to alter the looks of our home for the cats. Perhaps when my son moves into his home July 31st, he can build a catio or have one built for him. If Doodles doesn't like it, the female, Kuma, would love it!!! Thanks for the info. I'll show it to my son when I see him in a few days, but I do believe he knows about them.

@rebelann Thank you. We are all doing everything we can for Doodles. Since my big chat with him, he hasn't sprayed in two days. It's behavioral due to the mating of animals in the yard the vet thinks. They come out of the woods at night and leave all kinds of odors that drive him crazy. Hopefully, the cat psychologist can offer more help. If need be, we will take our chances by flying Doodles to Florida with us if his heart improves.

So sorry to hear about Doodles. It is often something new happening around them. I have a couple of unfixed girls in the house. One will do that when she is ready to breed each month. But making her a caged outdoor area that she can get to through a window has helped greatly. She can go out and talk to the boys now. Maybe you could get him talked into spraying outside somehow like that.

@DianneN Thats why I wondered if that would help. He could mark his territory where they would find it. But I know building something is not always possible. My contraption is not pretty. But all of the house cats seem to love being able to go out. And I dont have to worry about them getting run over or eaten by something. A couple of them have never been outside except for in the added on space.

I only wish we could do that. The vet thinks it's the smell of animals that come out of the woods at night and mate. It's definitely behavioral. Thanks so much for your suggestions.

@wolfgirl569 Your cats are very lucky to have a mommy like you. We walk Doodles around the yard several times a day. His sister goes out once in a blue moon to eat grass, but usually prefers looking outside from a screened in window.

Awww poor Doodles! Hopefully the cat psychologist can sort something out. Both of our cats have heart murmurs. Apparently it's extremely common in cats. I was just told by the vet that if one of them ever needed an operation they probably couldn't do it as an anaesthetic would kill him. It really is like having more children. Hope it all turns out well.

Thank you. I'm so sorry about your cats both having heart murmurs. Doodles does have a heart murmur which has been monitored for years. His vet noticed it was worse. That started the ball rolling for a specialist who found an enlarged heart and other strange heart things. He is truly like our baby, and we love him so much. If need be and his heart is strong enough, we will take him to Florida with us.

@DianneN That's good. I'm a large animal psychologist (you know how there are large and small animal vets), but my intuition suggests he wants to stay around for a bit. If he's suffering, and ready to "let go," he'll let you know somehow.

my friend, i am teary-eyed while reading your post. i have known Doodles and how he lights up your life in all situations. i am so sorry. are you amenable in to putting him to sleep? oh, i would not want to see any of our pets being euthanized. i hope Doodles will live the rest of his life with you, until it is time for him to cross the rainbow bridge. (i imagine Doodles' amusing antics)

@ridingbet No, Florida is where our winter vacation home is. Our son just bought a big, beautiful new house two miles from us here in Connecticut and doesn't want Doodles to spray all over it. I don't blame him. It cost him a fortune. That's why we decided to take Doodles with us to Florida, and have him live with us as usual when we return home.

Thank you so much, Ingrid. I have spoken to Doodles many times a day about his spraying and so far, we are spray free on day #3. Of course, we closed off many rooms, bought him an extra kitty box, and placed pheromones around the house to reduce his stress. I can't bear putting him to sleep, so if his heart is strong enough, we will fly him to Florida when we return in December. As sick as he is, he is still amusing us with his antics. He's a character for sure.

I understand. I hope things work out for the whole family. I had a cat once that started using the bed, but she was upset because my first husband was sick. When he went to a nursing home, she stopped. Then when current hubby moved and moved into a spare room at our house she started again. When we got married and started sleeping together, she stopped. I hope a pet psych can help.
