Good night to you all. Problems with Luna.

Tomorrow I will have to move all my plants in containers to have them away from Luna. She has destroyed a great part of my cacti collection. And although I can replace them by asking Cuttings from Lili, I had my own beautiful plants. Luna destroys more as she grows bigger. She is a big dog with a child´s interest. She is not 4 months yet, but she is already a big dog. I thought that she would spare the bigger containers, but that was cheer innocence from my part. The bigger she grows, the bigger she wants her "toys" to be. I´ll have to see what to give to her to play. She has some toys, but they are too little and too few. What can I do? I went to see a dog trainer, but I can´t pay his fees. Give me ideas and sleep tight

First you have to understand why Luna does this. May be you have not taught her to stay away from your plants, so she does not understand how to behave. Scolding Luna when she makes a mess, worsens the problem. This is often the way they have to show they are bored. Dogs need to spend a lot of time with their owner. If she "nibbles" the leaves, inform your vet, she could have a digestive problem or a lack of vitamins.

She want to play with the containers as they make sounds. Today I will change all of them to a place where there´s a closed door and I will not have her there until she grows up. Of course she is bored sometimes! But she wakes up very early and now we have freezing temperatures and I´m ill. Her toys are not enough. All is understandable, except that I cannot go out to play with her at dawn. I don´t think that she lacks any vitamin. She has too much energy.

@LadyDuck She does not chew leaves. I´m glad, because she has mostly destroyed my cacti collection. She loved to play with the plastic containers as she likes the sound of it.

@marguicha You can have plenty of energy but lack some important minerals and vitamins. If she does not "chew" the leaves anyway this is not the case.

If she is outside, maybe tie her with a lead short enough that she can't reach your plants.

I don´t think that I want to tie her. I´ll think about it.

Big dogs behave. I get the suspicion she is not getting the kind of training she urgently needs

@allknowing No. She will learn. But right now, I am learning what she is capable of doing every day that passes. The naughty child!!!

@marguicha I get a strong feeling that Luna will be the most misbehaved dog on earth with a mother like you

@Courtlynn But I do have a place to put the rest of my plants while Luna grows up and learns. Today she destroyed 5 mores small cacti pots at the terrace. Yesterday they were too high for her.

As I've said, dogs want to be inside with their owners. She will continue to destroy everything in sight simply because she is BORED while she is outside and alone. You don't need a dog trainer. You know what to do.

She would destroy my house if she was inside. She is too big for my house. Houses here are not like the houses in your country.

@marguicha why do you keep saying she would destroy your house? Dogs can be trained. Millions upon millions of people live just fine with their companion dogs in their houses. My parents always had dogs. None ever “destroyed” their house.

@NJChicaa Millions of people here have dogs that live outside. This post is about ideas to TRAIN my dog, not about a trained dog. We will never see eye to eye in the matter of having a big dog inside a small house. As I have said, my dog is an outside dog. Moreover, I don´t kiss my dog in her mouth. And I wash my hands after I play with her. And so do everyone of the people I know. Different uses, different cultures.

No matter how big Luna is, she is still like a child can't be trusted to go around. Scold her like a mothet does to a child. You must do that for her to know that you don't approved what she has been doing. And you must try to tie her at times when she doesn't behave. Its just a sort of discipline. And besides she must be used to it too. There will be cases when you need it. So better do it now while she is still young.

@marguicha No dear, for me its part of discipline. Now my dog when we go out would wait for his leash before going out. It will be of great help for her trainings. Talk to her like humans do. She will understand. But never forget you are still talking to a young child.

That´s what I do. Do you think that tying her is not abuse?

Maybe you could place some sort of natural repellent around your plants so she will not want to go near them? I read that orange peels and coffee grounds are things that tend to repel dogs...Here is an article that has some ideas. (Just make sure not to use anything that's poisonous to dogs.)
You worked tirelessly to landscape your yard and make your outdoor space a beautiful sanctuary, however you may want to keep your special place a dog-free zone.

I think you should give Luna a bigger toy, maybe.
