Really? They actually have this law in place?

Talk about naïve, what the heck were they thinking back then?
Did they actually buy into the whole Star Trek mentality?
Ok, I know anyone that knows me knows I would, but the government?? Really??
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Jump to navigation Jump to search The Extra-Terrestrial Exposure Law (14 C.F.R. 1211 of the Code of Federal Regulations) was the popular name for regulations adopted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration

Hi Rebelanne. Government can really be stupid (most of the time).

@rebelann But if there are aliens, the earth is protected and those will not be able to get thru our orbit.

I guess better to be cautious than to turn the blind eye. I am kind of surprised they took the initiative.

You have to remember though, back then they didn't know yet what kind of organisms might be hitching a ride back to earth. They were simply exercising caution to ensure that they didn't expose the human population unsuspectingly to an inter-stellar virus or something.
I just can't believe they actually were smart enough to 1) stop enforcing it after only a handful of lunar missions, and 2) actually repeal the law off the books. There's still laws on the books from the 1700s that the government hasn't repealed yet.

I think I misread the article. I'm pretty sure that earth has been invaded by more than a few organisms from outer space via meteors that hit the earth now and then. Those incidents of flesh eating bacteria makes me think those are from outer space.

Not necessarily @moffittjc some scientists have found bacteria thriving in lava beds, it's amazing what those single celled organisms can withstand.

@rebelann The only way alien organisms can survive entry into earth's atmosphere would be if they were embedded deep inside the meteor or rock or whatever the object is. The heat and friction of entering our atmosphere would burn up and kill off anything that was alive on the surface of the meteor.

Okay I won`t be as bold to say other.... things, do not exist but maybe the law was made to keep all the ....ahem... believers on a list.

@topffer just made a really good observation, bacteria can exist in outer space so if that's the case then maybe we've inadvertently brought it back here and it's grown into something unexpected. Recently there's been a few cases of flesh eating bacteria, could that have originated on the moon?

They were just being cautious back then. Consider all the shots you need to take just to visit a foreign country. It's the same principle. They found out it was okay to go into space without any repercussions, so they took the regulation off the books. Should we find life on other planets, it will probably be back in force.
