I cannot deny that most of you know what is the nature of my job as a Home-Based English Teacher. At first, I was so hesitant to share my secrets about it. The ups and downs of being a virtual teacher are not that easy if you don’t have the secret of catering different set of students. Now, I am comfortable to reveal the deepest secret teaching online. It has been almost 5 years that I am dealing with online students from kids to professionals. “Can you imagine how I change into a different person just for them?” They have different personalities and preferences in learning the English language.
Since I started, the most challenging part is to deal with my patience. It needs much patience when dealing with the kids. I can be a clown, teacher, parent and name all different characters. Through the years, I had developed the skills of being a good actor virtually. With this, I was able to carry out my job with a good performance during my online classes. The good thing is, I didn’t develop having a split personality.
“Are you a good actor in a particular situation?”
“Do you have the patience to teach kids?”

Hi Shav. I deal with children every schoolyear and even if they are the hardest to please, they are the most adorable. I am gentle with them until they test my patience.

@Shavkat It is true, Shav. They are a handful but I love them to bits.

I can feel you there. One moment, your student is a sweet little 5 year old then next you have to deal with a doctor/nurse/lawyer/businessman.
Teachers are really great actors, we cannot let them know we are undergoing something. All smiles.

i am, kabsat, even here at home. i have to put a strong facade when i feel pain because i do not want my son and sister to worry. this is if the pain is manageable. unless it is not tolerable anymore, i shed down my 'acting skills' and tell them how i feel.

@ridingbet One of my younger brothers is like it. A small pain is a big deal.

@Shavkat that is true. i would not even like my sister to sympathize with me when i complain of pain and ache. why? it is because she says she is more sickly than me. for instance, when i tell her i have headache, she will reply,"me too, i have headache and i take medicines but was not relieved. i did not sleep well last night even if i took Citirizine". see? one sentence from me is one paragraph to her. hahaha

Yes I am. Dealing with tenants. Each tenant is different so I "act" differently with each.

Yes, patience is a must when one is teaching even in real life and also online. But maybe online, can make you camouflage you irritation because they cannot see some of your body language, only your face.
I am planning to teach online when I finally retire, two years from now. However, I feel like I don't like to retire yet.
Maybe you can pm me some tips on how I can be a good online teacher like you.

No worries. You can just PM, my friend. Sometimes my face is so expressive and students can see the real emotions. However, the tone of my voice needs to be gentle. In fact, I am concealing my irritability when having this particular class.

I don't think I have it in me. You should try acting classes if you have the time. maybe you got a shot at a theater if you are good as you say you are. That's dangerous if you develop a split personality, we might end up having conversation with a stranger here

@anamika161088 I must admit when it was my first time to have classes with children. Now, it is a piece of cake.

I understand about your feeling. It's hard to teach kids.

@Shavkat hmm, I have to think about that.... (carefully I mean .) No, on second thoughts, no, I am not a good teacher. Kids follow me because I am ready to play with them and make them laugh. I lower myself to their level, and they feel safe and cared fore, that's all.

My first real job was teaching and yes it takes patience and I have plenty of it. I also taught adults and university students and they require more patience than the young ones. I think that you have to put on a different face for every job you do, in other words, you have to be professional - or act professional.
