Sea turtles have been around for about 110 million years and live for about 100 years. Here are some interesting facts about these reptiles: * They can hold their breath under water for five hours. They do this by slowing their heart rate to where it beats about every nine minutes. * Sea turtles and manatees eat sea grass. This helps to keep the beds of grass healthy. The grass is important to numerous marine animals and provide breeding and developmental grounds. * There are seven species of sea turtles. These are: Kemp's ridley, olive ridley, leatherback, flatback, loggerhead, green, and hawksbill. * They a great sense of direction because they are able to detect the Earth's magnetic field. They use it like a compass. * Sea turtles are very vulnerable when hatching and nesting because they cannot retract their heads and flippers into their shells.

They come to shore for laying eggs, right? I just had a question. How are they able to withstand the weight of water on them, with their own shells adding to it. There must be something the marine creatures and amphibians do to withstand that weight, water weight is not less.

Yes, and the number they lay depends on the species.
