'Ello, 'ello, 'ello, and welcome, welcome, welcome ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls! We are at #14a in Play it Again, Sam, a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. Today, I'm throwing an unexpected changeup, because I have confidence that hardly anyone is going to guess where I'm going with this. We are at the "original" portion: "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" by Paul Revere and the Raiders. "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone" is so closely associated with The Monkees that anyone could be forgiven for assuming that it's their tune. It was, however, written by Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, and recorded by Paul Revere and the Raiders for their 1966 album, Midnight Ride, which featured the Top 5 hit, "Kicks." Oddly, baffling, in fact, "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," a hard rocking, psychedelic classic, was not released as a single. I say "classic," because you oughta see the long list of bands that have covered it, a list longer than Lindsay Lohan's rap sheet! Here's the wind-up, and here's the pitch... Stay tuned! (Info verified by Wikipedia)
The first recorded version and still the best version, from their 1966 album, "Midnight Ride." You can here the roots of punk right here. It's no wonder that...

I think the Monkees gave the song life.

@teamfreak16 I agree! I listened to a couple of the other covers and I didn't like them as much. But I didn't know that somebody had put out the song before they did.

@1hopefulman - I think that the Monkees version was probably the first exposure to the song for a lot of people. It was a big hit, whereas the Raiders original wasn't even released as a single.

I am more familiar with The Monkees, but I'm not throwing stones at this version. Kicks is a good tune along with "Just Like Me." That band was fun with their Revolutionary outfits

@dgobucks226 - Mark Lindsay had a decent solo career as well. "Arizona" was a big hit for him.

@teamfreak16 You tube has some funny performances by The Raiders..... They used to go on those Hullabaloo shows back in the 60's with the Go Go dancers. Good stuff!
