Swing and a miss! We are at #14b, the "cover" portion of today's Play it Again, Sam and it's a cover that I love: Minor Threat's cover of Paul Revere and the Raiders' "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." I could have gone with The Monkees, who had a great Top 20 (#20) Billboard Hot 100 hit with it, or the Sex Pistols, or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, or any of the gazillion other bands that have covered "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," but I love Minor Threat, so here we go. Led by vocalist Ian McKaye, Washington DC's Minor Threat was one of the greatest, most influential hardcore punk bands in the history of the genre. A lot of punk bands have covered the song, so it was only natural that Minor Threat should do it as well. Recorded as "Steppin' Stone," the tune appeared on the band's 1981 EP, In My Eyes. The cover was highly successful, reaching #1 on the Hot 100 (I'm kidding. It wasn't even released as a single.) Seriously, though, this version is smoking white hot! Every single punk band in the world should aspire to sound like this. Especially the pop punk bands that you hear on the radio. (Of course, if Fall Out Boy sounded like this, you wouldn't hear them on the radio, now would you?) (Info verified by Wikipedia)
A great song by one of the best hardcore punk bands of all time :) comments

Had me rolling, hit number 1 on billboard charts. I only like some hardcore because lets be honest some just like to yell and forget that this is still supposed to be music. This has some catchy riffs and killer bass, not to mention the blend of vocals. I am more of just a straight punk guy, but this stuff has always been cool in my book.

@teamfreak16 Indeed, and gave bands like operation Ivy and even Nirvana a chance. What is neat about it that people do not even think about. Why oppression sucks.

@teamfreak16 Also check out the cover to that album and then check out the cover to this one. No need to listen but same without mohawk and different colors. Position is a bit different also, but that is neat and respect given. I never even realized that for some dumb reason.

True, but Minor Threat were hardcore trailblazers. Bad Brains, too!

Wonder if the Monkees heard this and went, "Dang, that is how we should've done this!"

The Monkees version rocked pretty hard for them. Definitely my favorite from their catalog!
