Swing and a miss! We are at #14b, the "cover" portion of today's Play it Again, Sam and it's a cover that I love: Minor Threat's cover of Paul Revere and the Raiders' "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone." I could have gone with The Monkees, who had a great Top 20 (#20) Billboard Hot 100 hit with it, or the Sex Pistols, or Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, or any of the gazillion other bands that have covered "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," but I love Minor Threat, so here we go. Led by vocalist Ian McKaye, Washington DC's Minor Threat was one of the greatest, most influential hardcore punk bands in the history of the genre. A lot of punk bands have covered the song, so it was only natural that Minor Threat should do it as well. Recorded as "Steppin' Stone," the tune appeared on the band's 1981 EP, In My Eyes. The cover was highly successful, reaching #1 on the Hot 100 (I'm kidding. It wasn't even released as a single.) Seriously, though, this version is smoking white hot! Every single punk band in the world should aspire to sound like this. Especially the pop punk bands that you hear on the radio.
