Warnemünde Germany

So our first port of call on our Baltic cruise was the seaside fishing port of Warnemünde. Warnemünde used to be in the former East Germany and my impression was that perhaps it would be a bit drab and uninteresting but NO it was a cute and pretty little town. Unfortunately for us it was a bank holiday in Germany on this day so many places were closed but the fish market and restaurants were all open. We walked past the station and into the small inlet where boats were moored. You could take a little boat trip from here or have lunch on the many restaurant boats tied up against the quayside. Some of the streets were cobbled and there were trees along the sides of the roads. Interestingly Rostock quite a large city further up the river were concerned that the little village of Warnemünde would cause problems preventing their access to the sea so the city of Rostock bought it in 1323 so that access could not be denied. One of its most interesting sites is the lighthouse and a building built next to it known as the teapot. They are side by side on the promenade. The lighthouse was built in 1887 and is 37 meters high. (121ft). The photo is of the lighthouse and the Teapot which is full of restaurants. Walking along the promenade with the town and quaint nicely colourfully painted fishermen's houses on the left and the long sandy beach and dunes on your right. After walking along the promenade we headed into the town. The town was really quite quaint and very pleasant indeed. We made our way to the main square where in front of the church was a little music festival going on with beer tents and stalls selling German sausage cooked over coals. We visited the church and wandered along the narrow lanes to the canal side where we sat down for a drink and to people watch for a while. If you wanted to you could visit Berlin on an organised tour which was incredibly expensive at over £330 ($437) (377 Euros) We chose not to do this as it involved a 3 hour trip on a bus to Berlin 3 hours back leaving only 3 hours to have a quick tour of Berlin. We could spend a weekend in Berlin for the same price so decided not to do this trip. A few people we spoke to did not realise that it involved sitting on a coach for 6 hours and wished they had not done it. So all in all Warnemünde actually surpassed my expectations and was quite a pleasant stop over and an interesting little port.

PLEASE put an 'ü' in the word Warnemünde. ü ü ü ü ü It looks odd with an 'u'. I don't know which holiday you encountered. Certainly not a Bank Holiday. Germany has no Bank Holidays. Whoever told you this told you a lie. Reunification happened in the year 1989. You have to search with a magnifying glass to find traces of the GDR now. Many town centres in the East look better than the ones in the West because they were reniovated or rebuilt not so long ago. There are many really cute towns you could visit.

@garymarsh6 The Monday after Christmas, Easter and Pentecost Sunday is always a holiday. This has nothing to do with banks. The 'ü' in the title looks good!

@MALUSE Bank holiday is a term we use for holidays that fall on a working day so it is an English translation of a national holiday not at the weekend and the two banks we saw were indeed closed!

It was May 21 Whit Monday 7th Monday after Easter. Also Known as Pentecost Monday and it is listed as a public holidayin Germany! Indeed the shops were closed and only the restaurants were open.. I do not have the U with the dots on my keyboard but will attempt to copy and paste it!

This modern building looking like a fish near the lighthouse is finally not shocking. Paying 377 Euros for a small trip like this one in bus is crazy.

Exactly I would rather spend a weekend in Berlin than just 3 hours ! The original building was built in 1926 but burned down after the war. It was rebuilt in the 1960's and renovated again in 2002. Renowned for its East German architecture.

@garymarsh6 I had a look and found 15 offers of flight+hotel from Paris to Berlin for a weekend at less than 150 Euros/person, this trip was way too expensive. A curved roof was something new in the 1960's, this building was deserving to be renovated.

@topffer Yes it is the same from here. There were many North Americans, South Americans, Indians Koreans and Japanese on the cruise so I guess for them it was a must but the cruise line were raking it in and taking advantage. Imagine 40X 330 = £13,200 (15,065.99 Euro) and there were five coaches a massive profit for the Cruise line.

Those small ports are surely interesting to visit. I hope to have more time soon to make short travels to other European countries.

@garymarsh6 My husband cannot make long distance travels anymore, so we will now concentrate on Europe only, better if short distance so we can go using our car and not the plane.

@garymarsh6 It's good to get to visit little gems on a cruise that aren't the usual well-known ports.

@garymarsh6 Belfast has become quite a popular cruise stop but I can't think for the life of me why.

@xFiacre Well as a ship building city what about the Titanic museum, further afield the Bushmills distillery and the Giants causeway.

You did a good thing by not opting to visit Berlin. That takes me to my tour in Australia. After a hectic outing to visit the Penguins March the previous night we were expected to be ready the next morning to take a ride to go past the Great Ocean Road. We did not but instead spent a day at the luxurious hotel we were put in. Did our own thing and only met the group in the evening for dinner. Most who took that trip told us that they spent time sleeping in the bus. and said we were wise (lol)

That sounds like an interesting enough village to visit. Was this Royal Caribbean? I always thought they stopped on Hamburg but personally, a smaller place is more to my tastes.

The teapot is contemporary addition. The lighthouse looks like its leaning a bit.
